POVERTY FOCUS IN NGPES Four key sectors Supporting sectors Cross-cutting areas Poverty-focused National Programmes Poorest and poor districts The theme of poverty reduction is dominant in the NGPES. It focuses on Four key sectors – Agriculture and Forestry, Education, Health and Infrastructure. Within Agriculture and Forestry, the priority is on improving livelihood through sustainable management of natural resources, with particular attention to remote and mountainous areas and ethnic groups. Examples include the elimination of unsustainable slash and burn cultivation, establishment of settled agriculture for the swidden farmers, and utilization of non-timber forest products. In Education, priority is accorded to primary education, vocational training and adult literacy; while basic health care including preventive and promotive aspects are emphasized in the health sector. 5 April 2006 Forum on Plans & PRSPs
