Water Cycle How does it rain?

Water Molecules Water is made up of molecules . Water changes state (gas, liquid, solid) when it’s molecules are heated or cooled.

Molecules Add Cold Add Heat
Water molecules become dense when in cold temperatures. This is seen when water turns to ice or changes from a gas to liquid. Add Heat Water molecules become less dense when heat is added. This happens when water changes from ice to liquid or from liquid to gas.

What is happening to the molecules?
Turn and Talk. Draw what you think the molecules look like at each stage of the water cycle.

Discuss How does the sun affect the water cycle?

What are the different parts of the water cycle called?
Review Vocabulary What are the different parts of the water cycle called?

Evaporation Water molecules are heated by the sun and turn into water vapor (gas form).

Transpiration Water molecules in plants and trees are heated by the sun and turn into water vapor (gas form).

Condensation Water molecules are cooled and come together in clouds.

Precipitation Water molecules form heavy dropletes that come down as rain, sleet, or snow.

Run Off Water molecules that have fallen to Earth from precipitation and run down from mountain and hills to the ocean.

Show what you know:

Complete Water Cycle
