7 Current Employment Trends in Teaching
In the 1960s and 1970s, a falling birthrate resulted in a surplus of teachers. This oversupply was recognized and connected with decreased enrollment in teacher-education programs for a time. During the late 1980s and 1990s, however, enrollment in teacher education programs grew again. ©2014 Cengage Learning. All Rights Reserved.

8 Current Employment Trends in Teaching
Analysts predict that there will be many candidates for teacher jobs in the upcoming years, but there also will be many teaching jobs. Some suggest that several million new teachers will be needed in the next decade. For what reasons? A large proportion of the current teaching corps is nearing retirement age. How can this enormous void in the workforce be filled in the coming decade? What types of opportunities exist for teachers in nonpublic schools? ©2014 Cengage Learning. All Rights Reserved.

9 Current Employment Trends in Teaching: Diversity of the Teaching Force
Though the U.S. school population is increasingly diverse, the teaching force has not kept pace. African American, Asian American and Hispanic American students make up almost 40 percent of the public school population, but only 15 percent or less of elementary and secondary teachers are from these minority groups. This disparity will continue and grow. How will this disparity shape teaching and learning? For what reasons? ©2014 Cengage Learning. All Rights Reserved.

Aspiring educators who desire to teach in a U.S. public school must be certified by the state in their chosen subject areas or grade levels. Previously, certificates usually were issued for life. However, now certificates are usually valid for only three to five years. Certification requirements vary widely from state to state. ©2014 Cengage Learning. All Rights Reserved.

Reciprocity of teacher certificates have been established between many states. Most states also have introduced alternative certification programs that help candidates pursue certification without following the traditional teacher preparation path. Urban teacher residency programs also have been introduced. ©2014 Cengage Learning. All Rights Reserved.
