State Facilities Bond Measure Qualified for Nov ballot Would authorize $9 billion in bonds to build and renovate schools and community colleges $2 billion to community colleges. $7 billion to K-12 districts, charter schools and technical education partnerships Local match required. The state pays 100% for new construction and 60% for modernization and renovation projects Facilities Bond Qualified for the ballot on 09/17/2015. The state would incur an estimated $8.6 billion in interest costs over 35 years, and annual payments were estimated at $500 million. Backers include the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California, the California Chamber of Commerce, more than 100 school boards and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. But Gov. Brown is strongly against it. Voters have approved $35 billion worth of state-funded bonds since 1998, but all of those measures were placed on the ballot by the Legislature, with governors’ support.

President’s Middle College Scholars K-16 Bridge (Cerritos Complete) TeacherTrac Summer STEM Institute English Dual Enrollment Pilot Program (Artesia High School) AB 288 (Holden-D) Strengthening the Teacher Preparation Pipeline (STPP) Project Project Lead the Way (ABC Unified School District) President’s Middle College Scholars Academy: The President’s Middle College Scholars Academy is a program developed to reach out to high school students who are interested in becoming a teacher. 2-year academy. Scholars will have completed a minimum of 24.5 college units including three science courses that are transferable to any CSU and UC and required of future STEM teachers.  ABC Unified School District has participated in all 3 cohorts.  Cohort #1 = 8 students, Cohort #2 = 8 students, Cohort #3 = 7 students Cerritos Complete/K-16 Bridge 111 students from the ABC Unified School District participated in K-16 Bridge. K-16 Bridge: is part of the college’s completion strategy. Students receive step-by-step assistance in completing the college Early Success Program (ESP), enrollment in a Summer Connection course, counseling appointment, career exploration assistance, K-16 Bridge Workshops and a personalized (12-15 units recommended). These students will be eligible for a merit based scholarships through Cerritos Complete.  This scholarship will qualify students for either a tuition waiver or a book voucher.  Students must successfully pass their math and English class, and maintain a 2.0 GPA semester. TeacherTRAC Pathway: Teacher TRAC (Training Academy) Pathway with Cerritos H.S. and Artesia H.S. Students will take EDEL 100 (Intro to Teaching and Learning in Diverse Contemporary Classrooms) a 1 unit class that is transferable to the CSU and EDT 110 (Introduction to Educational Technology), a 2 unit class that is transferable to the CSU.  These 2 classes have been articulated with the 2 high schools and students will take these classes in their 12th grade year.  This will be piloted for Fall 2016. TeacherTRAC Summer STEM Institute Teacher TRAC future teachers are selected to be part of a 6 week Teacher TRAC summer STEM Institute.  Summer STEM Institute addresses both math/science preparation and increase the pipeline of qualified math and science teachers.  The institute includes an Introduction to Earth Science Course, training on the use of NASA science kits and a 4 week paid internship.  During their internship, Teacher TRAC students work in teams of two to conduct workshops for over 200 middle school students in ABC Unified and Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School Districts. English 100 Dual Enrollment Class at Artesia H.S.: The instructor is an adjunct Cerritos College English Instructor who also teaches at Artesia high school.  Dual Enrollment is when a high school student takes a college course while still in high school and receives both high school and college credit. A total of 22 out of 23 students passed the English 100 class.  Strengthening the Teacher Preparation Pipeline (“STPP”) project The project is a joint effort of Project Tomorrow, ABC Unified School District, Cerritos College, and CSU Long Beach to create an aligned and coherent teacher preparation pathway, so that students and teachers at each stage of the pipeline, beginning in high school, have the resources and support they need to succeed in the teaching profession. Project Tomorrow has received a grant from the Silver Giving Foundation to implement this “Grow Your Own Teachers” strategy in ABC Unified in with the introduction of YouthTEACH2Learn (YT2L) and Educators Rising California, and with support from Cerritos College and CSU Long Beach. Key components at each stage of the pipeline include significant clinical experience in teaching for students, near-peer mentoring, dual or cross-enrollment agreements, and ongoing, shared professional development to develop teaching knowledge and skills, particularly in math and science. Project Lead the Way Partnership with ABC Unified School District.  This work is happening through the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Linked Learning (AMETLL) grant, part of the California Career Pathways Trust that the Technology Division has. High School = 193 students (actual). Credit by Exam Middle School = 1,393 (estimated) in the engineering pathway Elementary School = 350 (estimated) in the engineering pathway ABCUSD High schools: Gahr, Artesia , Cerritos ABCUSD Middle schools: Carmenita, Fedde, Haskell, Tetzlaff, Kennedy and Juarez
