2 The Electoral Process Each state chooses electors who are responsible for casting a vote to tell Congress who their state chooses to be the president. Each state’s electors are equal to the number of Representatives & Senators. This process elects the President by state, not individual.

Democrat = 15 million Republican = 5 million Indiana – 6 million people Democrat = 2 million Republican = 4 million Ohio – 18 million Democrat = 8 million Republican = 10 million Democrats = 25 million votes - WINNER Republican = 19 million votes

Illinois – 20 million people Democrat = 15 million Republican = 5 million Electoral Votes = 21 Indiana – 6 million people Democrat = 2 million Republican = 4 million Electoral Votes = 11 Ohio – 18 million Democrat = 8 million Republican = 10 million Electoral Votes = 20 Democrats = 21 Electoral Votes (25 M) Republican = 31 Electoral Votes (19 M)- WINNER

9 How long can a President serve?
22nd Amendment – 2 terms If a Vice President takes over with 2 or fewer years left in the presidency, then he can be re- elected to 2 more terms. So what is the longest time a president can actually serve?

25th Amendment says the Vice President is next in line The Presidential Succession Act of 1947 lists who is in line after the Vice President to take over. Speaker President Pro Tem Secretary of State Secretary of Treasury Secretary of Defense
