3. COUNSELOR APPOINTMENT PROCEDURES
Walk-in Appointments
Students can see their counselor without an appointment before school, during lunch or after school.
Scheduled Appointments
Student will receive a yellow pass with a time and date for their appointment
You are responsible for keeping your appointment.
Parents and students are asked to remain in the lobby until their counselor is available in order to retain confidentiality.
Please refrain from cell phone usage while in the office.

5. ON-LINE REQUIREMENT
At least one course must be taken on-line. At NSBHS, we
use the blended model with Personal Fitness, Government,
and Economics, to meet this requirement.
An online course can be taken through Volusia Virtual or Florida Virtual School during summer or the school year.
Students must take the full content of the course:
1.0 credit course – complete both semesters
0.5 course – complete course

10. MAKING THE GRADE!
To be promoted to 10th grade students must have a minimum of five credits and eleven to be promoted to the 11th grade. The table below shows the promotion requirements for each grade level:

11. Tools for remediation:
REMEDIATION OPTIONS
Remediation is your student’s responsibility!
Review their Gradebook weekly.
Communicate with their teachers through .
Meet their school counselor to discuss concerns & opportunities on campus.
If at anytime in their high school career they have earned an “F” in a core subject; they are responsible for making up that credit to meet graduation requirements!
Tools for remediation:
Office Hours are daily for the first thirty minutes prior to lunch.
Odyssey Lab- designed for remediation of one class (seniors have priority seating)
VVS (Volusia Virtual School) taking an online district course for credit retrieval. EOC courses must be re-taken in its entirety.
FLVS- Parent generated application for remediation Transcript required to apply the grade.

12. WHAT TO DO FRESHMAN YEAR?
Get to know your school counselor; they are familiar with how challenging the 9th grade transition can be.
Join a club, or an organization outside of school, and participate in a sport/activity.
Every grade counts-protect your GPA.
Consider SGA- provides leadership opportunities
and many campus interactions.
Volunteer in the community- attend the CSH workshop to register your hours.
Start researching career, military, and college options.
Sign up for at least one Honors or AP course in the spring.

13. WHAT TO DO SOPHOMORE YEAR
Compare credits and grades toward graduation requirements and recognitions.
Meet with their school counselor about advanced placement and honors courses. Discuss Dual Enrollment with your parents and consider taking the PERT.
Attend the community service workshop if they have not done so, and or continue to accumulate community service hours. Consider opportunities within the community. Seek leadership opportunities.
Take the PSAT test in October, that's the SAT practice test.
Strengthen relationships with peers, teachers, counselors, activity sponsors, and employers-they will be writing your recommendations for your college and scholarship applications.
Get involved…explore clubs and organizations available at school. Future employers and schools like to see active students. Continue to seek out leadership roles.
Get serious about researching career, military, and college options.

Meet the requirements for a standard high school diploma based on the year the student entered high school as a 9th grade student.

Attain one or more industry certifications.

18. WALKING IN WHITE 3.5 weighted GPA
Each year, a group of graduating seniors earns the honor of graduating with a white cap and gown — “Walking In White” is unique to NSBHS. Below are the requirements for this honor:

23. COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS WORKSHOP
Meetings are held during office hours in the media center.
Students MUST attend one workshop for community service hours prior to establishing the volunteer service contract.
Guidelines state hours are counted after CSH workshop.
Only hours completed during grades 9 – 12 will be added to the student’s record after completion of the workshop.
All workshop dates are listed on the NSBHS website and displayed in the school counseling office.

24. DUAL ENROLLMENT
Students in grades 9 – 12 are eligible to take dual enrollment courses at Daytona State College, if they have a high school GPA.
Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to enroll in Associative of Arts/Science coursework.
