1 ACOS 3 Relate major tissues and organs of the skeletal, circulatory, reproductive, muscular, respiratory, nervous, and digestive systems to their functions. Arranging in order the organizational levels of the human body from the cell through organ systems

2 Levels of Organization
Cell-the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions. Tissue-a collection of cell working together to perform a job Organ-a collection of tissue working together to perform a job Organ System-a collection of organs working together to perform a job Organism-a collection of organ systems working together to perform a job

3 Human Body Systems Excretory Skeletal Muscular Endocrine Immune
Integumentary Digestive Nervous Circulatory Respiratory Excretory Skeletal Muscular Endocrine Immune

4 Integumentary System Protection of internal organs and regulate body temperature Skin, hair, nails Where on earth are the most reported cases of skin cancer?

5 Immune System Remove infectious diseases and other pathogens from the human body Tonsils, lymph, thymus Is a fever good or bad?

6 Skeletal System Provide structure and support to the human body
Bones, cartilage, ligaments Do men and women have the same number of bones?

7 Excretory System Rid the body of wastes, including excess water and salts Kidneys, liver, bladder What things are really causing your back ache?

8 Muscular System Works with the skeletal and nervous system to produce movement Muscles, tendons, marrow Can we ever do double with the same muscles on the same day?

9 Endocrine System Controls growth and development with hormones
Thyroid gland, hypothalamus, pituitary glands Why are 7th graders crazier than a run over dog?

10 Digestive System Convert food into energy that can be used by the body
Stomach, intestines, saliva Does heart burn have anything to do with the heart?

11 Respiratory System Provide the body with oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Lungs, nose, trachea Why can a baby drink and breathe at the same time but we can’t?

12 Nervous System The body’s control center. Brain, spinal cord, nerves
Can we control reflex actions?

13 Circulatory System Deliver oxygenated blood to the organ systems
Heart, vessels, blood What color is blood?

14 Anatomical Position: body is standing erect, face forward, with upper limbs at sides and the palms forward Midline: imaginary line running down center of the body Right vs. Left

15 Directional Terms Ventral-towards the front/belly
Dorsal-towards the back/spine Superior-above Inferior-below Medial-towards the midline Lateral-away from the midline Proximal-closer to the point of origin Distal-further from the point of origin Superficial-closer to body surface Deep-further from body surface

16 Directional Terms
