Objective: Learn how to add and subtract fractions.

Adding and Subtracting Fractions with the same denominator:
Steps: 1. Add or Subtract the numerators. 2. Write the sum or difference over the denominator. 3. Rewrite in simplest form. Example: = 4 10 = 2 5

Adding and Subtracting Fractions with different denominator:
Steps: Find the LCD (Least common denominator) of the 2 denominators. Rewrite the fractions using the common denominator. Add or Subtract. Rewrite fraction in simplest form. If the answer is an improper fraction you must convert it to a mixed number.

Example: = First, find the least common multiple of the 2 denominators. 4= 4, 8, 12, 16… = 6, 12, 18… Then we can do it 2 ways, vertically or horizontally: Vertically: 1 × _3__ 4 × 3_= 12 - 1 × _2_ 6 × 2_= 12 ___________________ 1 12 Horizontally: 1 x x2 = 4 x x2 = 1
