Welcome to the Chapin Go Center/C-5 Lab! Today you will: Understand the College-Planning Process 2. Create an account on College Board 3. Create you FSA ID 4. Visit with your counselor for your senior interview Get your computer ready!

2 Based on 94 Senior Survey Answers:
*Most seniors believe to be on track for graduation. *94% of respondents plan to go to college. *13.8% of students plan to join the military. *51% of respondents are considering attending UTEP. *Most students chose Financial Aid and Scholarships as the topics they need more information about.

5 Step 1: Understand admissions factors
Quality/Rigor of Academic Courses Academic Performance/Grades Test Scores (SAT, SAT II, ACT, AP, IB, etc) Extra Curricular Activities

6 Academic Performance Your high school academic record is one of the most important factors in college admission. College will look at a few aspects: Course Selection: Challenge yourself with a rigorous course load and high level classes, including AP, IB, or honors courses. Grades: Every year counts, starting with freshman year

7 GPA & Rank GPA trends: Keep improving throughout high school
Class rank Do you know your GPA/ Class Rank? Students should see the Registrar before school, at lunch and after school for their GPA and Class Rank

8 Your essay quality Demonstrate writing ability and self-expression
Display an interest that shows your enthusiasm for the colleges to which you’re applying Common App Writing Prompts Your essay quality

10 Step 2 About Testing SAT/ACT
SAT measures what you know and how well you apply that knowledge: critical reading, mathematics, and writing ACT has four sections: Reading, English, science reasoning, and mathematics. Some schools require SAT II Subject tests. You must investigate this ASAP. Remember, you cannot take SAT I and SAT II’s on same day

15 TSI TESTING-What is it? The TSI Assessment (TSIA) is part of the Texas Success Initiative program designed to help your college or university determine if you are ready for college-level course work in the general areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Areas tested include Math, Reading, Writing (multiple choice), and an Essay. If you are an incoming college student in Texas, you are required to take the TSI Assessment — unless you are already exempt.

16 TSI Scores* Math – 350 Reading – 351
Writing – 340 & 4 on Essay OR (363) 340 & 5 on Essay (350) *Current scores needed to demonstrate college readiness. Scores needed could be increased for next year.

17 TSI Exemptions ACT -Composite score of 23 and 19 on English will place students in English 1301 & college credit reading courses (US History, Pol Sci.) -Composite score of 23 and 19 on Math will place students in Math 1314,1324, or 1342.

18 SAT (Administered before March 2016)
Combined Critical Reading and Math on Reading will place students in English 1301 & college credit reading courses (US History, Pol Sci.) Combined Critical Reading and Math on Math will place students in Math 1314,1324, or 1342.

19 SAT (Administered on or after March 5, 2016)
Evidence Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) with a minimum score of 480 will place students in English 1301 & college credit reading courses (US History, Pol Sci.) Mathematics with a minimum score of 530 will place students in Math 1314,1324, or

Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan with a goal of creating a set of online tools that help educate students. The organization produces short lectures in the form of YouTube videos out/benefits/khan-academy-practice *Official SAT practice available!

24 Having trouble texting a class code to 81010?
If you're using an app-based messaging service on a device that isn't compatible with short codes (like an iPod or iPad), you'll need to download our app. 81010 won't work with devices that can only use IMessage. Each time you send a command text to 81010, you should receive a response back. Text "Help" or "LIST" to If you receive an error message or no reply, try texting the class code to instead. Your cell plan may not work with short codes like 81010, so use a traditional 10-digit number instead. If you're still having trouble joining a class by text, please contact the Support team with your cell phone number and the class code. You can also download the Remind app or create an account at Remind.com if you have access to a smartphone or computer.

What you may consider? Academic programs Financial aid and scholarship opportunities Size and diversity of student body Location Campus life—athletics, activities, housing Graduation and retention rates *Most importantly, think about where you will be the most happy and successful in your college life!

28 Applying Narrow and categorize your choices
More than likely colleges (1 or 2) Good match colleges (2 to 4) Reach schools (1 or 2) Review scholarships/financial aid Is the school need based or merit based? Review application essays and share drafts with a trusted teacher, adviser or family member

Request transcripts in a timely manner. Schedule interviews if needed.

31 Step 4: Develop a financial plan
Know your options: grants, loans, work study, etc. In October of your senior year, you should begin filling out the FAFSA application. This is important even if you do not believe you will qualify. Some schools require FAFSA in order to award you any scholarship or grant. CSS Profile: verify if your school requires this additional financial aid application. This is the one financial aid application that you pay for and you will usually apply during the first semester.
