9 “The development of learning skills and work habits is an integral part of a student’s learning.”
“…the evaluation of learning skills and work habits, apart from any that may be included as part of a curriculum expectation in a subject or course, should not be considered in the determination of a student’s grades.” “Assessing, evaluating, and reporting on the achievement of curriculum expectations and on the demonstration of learning skills and work habits separately allows teachers to provide information to the parents and student that is specific to each of the two areas of achievement.” “It is expected that teachers will work with students to help them develop [their] learning skills and work habits.” “The sample behaviours are intended to assist but not restrict teachers in their efforts to help students become effective learners, and will look different at the various grade levels.” - Growing Success, p. 10

13 SECONDARY Co-Created Criteria
The detail/sophistication of the criteria changes with grade level. Criteria are posted for reference, review and editing.

14 Points to ponder.... Assessment of Learning Skills and Work Habits is holistic in nature taking in consideration the emotional and social development of individual students. Teachers know their students best and should be sure to assess their students equitably

15 Points to ponder... Teachers need to help their students improve their Learning Skills and Work Habits by modelling strategies, providing opportunities for practice, and giving timely feedback. Each Learning Skill and Work Habit needs to be taught, assessed and evaluated as appropriate for each student. Students should not be required to demonstrate all criteria.

28 KEEPING RECORDS it is important to keep anecdotal records on each student’s learning skills and work habits; anecdotal records provide a reference point for conversations with students and parents; anecdotal records provide evidence for evaluating and reporting Learning Skills and Work Habits Anecdotal records of LSWH provide the same function as records of marks for evaluative activities: they provide evidence on which to base our professional judgment to determine the E, G, S, or N which is reported to parents on Report Cards.

29 Example

30 example

31 Exit card Muddiest point

32 Report Card Comments NO educational jargon
Please do not use the language of the Achievement Chart or the Ontario Curriculum Expectations YES to STRENGTH and NEXT STEP Strength would speak to what has been learned ie know and can do * Next step should be specific and identify what the student needs to do to improve achievement

33 Example comment Johnny can successfully analyze text as demonstrated in his reading portfolio. He needs to work on making inferences. To do this Johnny should use direct quotes to support his ideas.
