1 APPLYING GIS FUNCTIONS IN NRW REDUCTION ACTIVITIES
Ir. Zainuddin Bin Md Ghazali Chief Operating Officer Ranhill Water Services Sdn Bhd 83, Matang Building, Jalan Langkasuka, 80350 Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Tel: HP: Website:

2 NRW = System Input – Water billed
What is NRW? Non Revenue Water definition is quantity of water produced from treatment plant not billed to customer  NRW = System Input – Water billed

3 * A measuring scale for Water Supply company efficiency
The formula if P = System Input , C = Billed Consumption P - C = % NRW P C P * A measuring scale for Water Supply company efficiency

4

5 Infrastructure Leakage Index (ILI)
Calculation for ILI is; CARL (Current Amount Real Loses) UARL (Un-Avoidable Real Loses) CARL = physical loses includes overflow, burst, and leaks UARL = (18 x Lm Nc + 25 Lp) Pr Pr = Pressure. Avg retic and distr mains = 3.2 Bar. Lm = Pipe length from GIS in meter. Nc = Number of Billings connections. Lp = Private length, or avg communication pipe in meter.

6 PHYSICAL LOSSES TARGET MATRIX

7 Physical Loss Performance: Categories; Guide to Further Action
B C D Good: further loss reduction may be uneconomic; careful analysis cost effective improvements. Potential for marked improvements: Consider pressure management, better active leakage practices and better maintenance. Poor: Tolerable only if water is plentiful and cheap; even then intensify NRW reduction efforts. Terrible: Inefficient use of resources; NRW reduction programs imperative and priority.

8 Why NRW is very important to any water operator?
To fully optimize usage of treated water produced by consumers To optimize revenue Increase operational efficiency

9 Water Asset Registration DMA establishment Network Modeling
Where do GIS functions benefit NRW Management? In areas of: Water Asset Registration DMA establishment Network Modeling Planning & Operation

10 Water Asset Registration
Where do GIS functions benefit NRW Management? Water Asset Registration

11 Asset Registration : eliminate OUTDATED AND UNMAINTAINED DATA
Created once in Excel and no update after that TACIT

12 JOHOR DIGITAL MAP & PIPELINES

15 Single point of reporting for water assets
GIS for Asset Registration Single point of reporting for water assets Avoid outdated and unmaintained data

16 Where do GIS functions benefit NRW reduction?
DMA Establishment

17 GIS for DMA establishment
DMZ – BW16 Network Tracing to locate valves to be boundary valves for DMA

18 GIS for DMA establishment

22 Result – better analysis for NRW by DMA on commercial losses
* Source of data courtesy of SAJ Holdings Sdn Bhd

23 To provide scale-down NRW analysis by DMA
GIS for DMA establishment To provide scale-down NRW analysis by DMA Improve DMA boundary and data value Better analysis on commercial losses Leakage percentage and pressure management

24 Where do GIS functions benefit NRW reduction?
Network Modeling

25 Hydraulic Modeling : tedious work in Excel and plotting in hydraulic software
Create in Excel and transfer to Model

26 Data transfer from GIS to Hydraulic Modeling Software

27 Laid on Google map

28 Result: Analysis on DMA pressure survey (High Pressure)

29 Avoid redrawing of data Data transfer from GIS to Modeling software
GIS for Network Modeling Avoid redrawing of data Data transfer from GIS to Modeling software Model can be shown as layer-lapping with GIS map/Google map

30 Where do GIS functions benefit NRW reduction?
Planning & Operation

31 Pipe burst record in GIS
GIS for Planning of Asset Replacement GPS to locate burst location and record in GIS Burst location Burst Total

32 - for pipe replacement program
GIS for Planning of Asset Replacement Record of Asset Burst records - for pipe replacement program

33 Planned Shut Down & Trace to Affected Customers Application

34 Record of customer affected by water disruption from billing system

35 GIS for DMA Maintenance
Opening/closing of valve: better management on service interruption during DMZ maintenance - ZPT - Step test

36 Challenges & lessons learned
Be achieved with: High commitment from all staffs in the company – from top to bottom Collaboration & Co-operations Willing to improve Rapid development environments, ease of use, product reliability, and vendor stability are among key contributors to selecting integrated platform options Customer service/stakeholders’ interests must be the key indicator – fulfill the needs and efficient service
