1 Coordinate Plane Basics
Unit 5 Section 5.1 Coordinate Plane Basics

2 This vertical line is called the y-axis.
The Coordinate Plane y This vertical line is called the y-axis.

3 This horizontal line is called the x-axis.
The Coordinate Plane y This horizontal line is called the x-axis. x

4 The x-axis and y-axis separate the coordinate plane into 4 parts.

5 These parts are called Quadrants.
The Coordinate Plane y These parts are called Quadrants. x

6 y x The Coordinate Plane Quadrant II Quadrant I Quadrant III
Quadrant IV

7 y x The Coordinate Plane Each line has a number associated with it.
Just like the dashes on a number line. x

9 y x The Coordinate Plane
This point in the middle of the x-axis and y-axis is called the origin. x

10 There are many other points on the coordinate plane.
5 4 3 2 1 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 There are many other points on the coordinate plane. x -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 5

11 These points are described by ordered pairs.
The Coordinate Plane y 5 4 3 2 1 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 These points are described by ordered pairs. x -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 5

12 Ordered Pair An ordered pair is a set of parenthesis with two numbers inside. The numbers are separated by a comma. ( 1 , 3 )

13 The first number is called the x- coordinate.
Ordered Pair ( 1 , 3 ) The first number is called the x- coordinate.

14 The second number is called the y- coordinate.
Ordered Pair ( 1 , 3 ) The second number is called the y- coordinate.

15 Ordered Pair ( x , y )

16 Now, let’s graph this ordered pair on the coordinate plane.
( 1 , 3 ) Now, let’s graph this ordered pair on the coordinate plane.
