1 Veterinarian By: Karla Garcia

2 What will I do as a Veterinarian?
A veterinarian falls under the medical field. Examine animals to diagnose their health problems Treat and dress wounds Perform surgery on animals Tell animal owners about general care, medical conditions and treatment Work to prevent and cure animal diseases

3 Types of Veterinarians
Companion animal veterinarians- treat pets and generally work in private clinics and hospitals. (They do everything I said in the last slide and is also the type of Vet I want to be) Equine veterinarians- work with horses Food animal veterinarians- work with farm animals which are raised to be food sources. They spend most of their time on ranches treating illnesses and injuries and testing for and vaccinating against diseases. Food safety and inspection veterinarians- inspect and test livestock and animal products for major animal diseases and provide vaccines to treat animals Research veterinarians- work in laboratories, conducting clinical research on human and animal health problems. They may also perform tests on animals to see the effect of drug therapies etc.

4 Did the assessments help me decide this?
Career Cluster Inventory: My top choice was Health Science and a Vet is under that “cluster”. Entrepreneurial career assessment: , you have an outstanding ability to be an entrepreneur. My score was 80. Overall the assessments did not help me decide anything. I’ve wanted to be a veterinarian since I was in 4th grade and I was always sure about this decision. But I wasn’t sure about opening up my own animal hospital and the Entrepreneurial career assessment did help me lean more to a yes.

8 On the road to success!! To become a Veterinarian I must first graduate high school. I have to go to college for 4 years, then veterinary school which is another 4 year program and finally pass a state licensing exam. It is a very hard career to study for but I’m smart and I’m determined. Some new doctors work at internships for a year or two afterwards. During those internships they put their knowledge to the test and work on animals under the supervision of more experienced Vets.

9 Employment and Outlook
About 16% of veterinarians are self employed meaning they’re independent, the owner of their own business. The number of pets people have is expected to rise. Pet owners are more likely to pay expensive treatments now then the past. This will increase the work for Vets and the demand for this occupation will remain strong.

10 Why do I want to become a Veterinarian?
I want to become a Vet because I love animals. I also really like helping people and by being a Veterinarian I will be helping not only the animal but the owner as well. I’m really good with animals and really like being around them and to be able to do that as a living is just amazing. Whenever I see an injured animal I really want to do everything I can to help but sadly cant do much because I don’t have the experience necessary and I’m just a kid. I want to be able to help or save as many animals as I possibly can so by becoming a Vet and opening up my clinic I will be able to do that. Just the thought will make everything completely worth it.
