1 Modern Teaching Methods in Military Education
I am happy that so many of you could make it today. Let me just start by introducting myself. I am Colonel Andrija Kozina Research and Development Officer from Center for Defense and Strategic Studies What I would like to present to you today is Modern Teaching Methods in Military Education. Presented by Andrija Kozina

2 Agenda PROJECT “MODERN TEACHING METHODS” The Pyramid Learning
Learning Styles Bloom’s Taxonomy vs. Pyramid Learning Teaching Methods BLENDED LEARNING INSTEAD OF A CONCLUSION QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS I have divided my presentation in the following main areas: 1. JANKO BOBETKO CENTER FOR DEFENSE AND STRATEGIC STUDIES 2. PROJECT “MODERN TEACHING METHODS” 3. BLENDED LEARNING 4. CONCLUSION My presentation will take about 15 minuteas.

3 What Is Teaching? Teaching is a process intended for learning by inducing a behavioural change in teaching. It is the art of communicating a message with an impact on audience. Pedagogy is the art or profession of teaching. I think what we need to define first is: What is teaching?

4 TYPES OF TEACHING ACTIVE PASSIVE LEARNER ORIENTED TEACHER ORIENTED
Please tell me, What conclusion can we draw from this pictures.

5 If not motivated, a student are ...
Uninterested, Restless, disrupts and/or avoids classes, Inactive, flabby, he/she is sleeping in class, looking out the window, avoiding work, and is depressed, Not making effort in work, Not handing over school assignments on time, Not achieving success and "collects" bad grades.

6 Quality Teaching Teaching should be: interesting, diverse and dynamic. It must be "quirky" and constantly intellectually stimulating for participants.

7 OK so, I would like to turn to The Pyramid learning
Active Learning

8 SKILLFUL TEACHING Skillful teaching is grounded in three core assumptions: Skillful teaching is whatever helps students learn Skillful teachers adopt a critically reflective stance towards their practice The most important knowledge needed for skillful teachers is to keep constant awareness of how students are experiencing their learning and perceiving teachers’ actions.

9 Learning Styles What are learning styles?
Learning styles are different ways of taking in and understanding information. These ways are affected by age, experience, physiology, culture, and many other factors. VISUAL LEARNERS AUDITORY LEARNERS TACTILE/KINESTHETIC LEARNERS ACTIVISTS THINKERS THEORISTS PRAGMATISTS Visual Learners take numerous detailed notes; often close their eyes to visualize or remember something . Auditory Learners sit where they can hear, acquire knowledge by reading aloud. Kinesthetic Learners need to be active and take frequent breaks; speak with their hands and with gestures. Active learners -learn well in situations that enable them to do something physical Thinkers like to thoroughly think before acting. Like listening and do not like being the center of attention. Theorists like to see how things agree in general. They are logical and objective. Pragmatists like to see how things work in practice. They like to experiment with new ideas.

10 Modern Teaching Methods
Modern teaching methods are ways to work on educational activities; both teachers and students must be active participants in the teaching process in which students acquire contemporary knowledge and develop skills. The methods that encourage students to be active, and that encourage learning experience, observation and experimentation, should be used whenever possible. HIGHER LEVELS OF KNOWLEDGE

11 How Do We Choose Teaching Methods
COMBINATION OF WORKING METHODS DYNAMIC ACTIVITIES AND HOLDING STUDENTS’ ATTENTION The choice of optimal method depends on: learning content the type of lesson school learners the duration of the hours material conditions of school and ... the teacher.

Teaching Methods Demonstration Conversation Practical work Word problem Drawing Work on the text Handling concrete Making posters Field /terrain work Mind maps Learning Strategies / Notes Cooperative learning PPT presentations Games Making models Assignments ICT programs Research tasks on the Internet Project teaching Blended learning Case Studies Quiz ... In this part of my presentation I’d like to talk abaut teaching methods.

14 Rotating Chair Discussions
Conversation Methods Rotating Chair Discussions Experts group Panel Debate Think / Pair / Share The Rotating Chair group discussion method works well in several situations; groups well versed in the ordinary usefulness of this process of building ideas will comfortably engage rotating chair practices for handling difficult discussions. Experts groups- a cooperative learning technique that reduces racial conflict among school children, promotes better learning, improves student motivation, and increases enjoyment of the learning experience. Panel - The word ‘panel’ means a group of experts. The discussion held among these expert members in front of an audience could be called panel discussion. Debate is a method of formally presenting an argument in a disciplined manner. Through logical consistency, factual accuracy and some degree of emotional appeal to the audience are elements in debating, where one side Often prevails over the other party by presenting a superior "context" and/or framework of the issue. Think / Pair / Share-Have attendees turn to someone near them to summarize what they're learning, to answer a question posed during the discussion, or to consider how and why and when they might apply a concept to their own situations. 14 14

15 Groups Working on the Text Studying Texts Creative Reading
Critical Reading Determining a Title Studying Texts Looking for and using text structure helps students to study texts in order to make connections and think more deeply about ideas encountered during reading. Creative Reading is a creative activity in and of itself. It helps young people to explore the world and enriches them educationally and emotionally. Critical reading involves presenting a reasoned argument that evaluates and analyses what you have read. Being critical, therefore - in an academic sense - means advancing your understanding, not dismissing and therefore closing off learning. Determining a Title - Like any piece of writing, an effective title does not appear in one magic moment; it takes brainstorming and revising. 15 15

16 Web/video conferencing
Blended Learning Tutorials Blogs Discussion boards Web/video conferencing Mind mapping Blended learning combines classroom and technological instruction to promote learning. Students are sometimes exposed to web-based and computer-based instruction, as well as instructional multimedia such as videos or educational software. Tutorials- the weekly lecture was complemented by one-hour weekly tutorials led by a teaching assistant. Online tutorials were designed to complement the lectures and provide additional background materials, example problems, additional problem-solving opportunities, and other activities. Blogs could be in the form of a group blog for a unit involving teachers and / or students using it to share information and discuss topics. Learning communities can also be loosely connected networks involving many individuals reading and commenting on each other’s blogs around a common theme. Discussion boards-are similar to blogs in that they often work at the augmentation or modification level. If, for example, the Discussion Board is used for reflection, thinking and analysing type activities then it can be seen as a modification process. Web/video conferencing-is similar to live Internet streaming; it is used purely to deliver information live to students off campus then the technology is used at a substitution level. Mind mapping-If a mind mapping tool is used purely as a substitute for pen and paper then the activity is at the substitution level, however if students are including links, videos and graphics then this would be considered to be at augmentation level. 16 16

19 INSTEAD OF THE CONCLUSION
Active student learning starts with a skillful teacher It is essential that teachers establish the classroom and instructural tone, environment and excitement. The teaching strategies and students learning activities must be carefully selected to support the students’ achievment of the lesson’s content and outcomes. After all I’ve said and done, I think we can conclude that active student learning starts with a skillful teacher I am happy to let you have any of the slides or information in my presentation if you like.

20 And now I will happy to answer any questions you may have.
