2 Psalm 28:7 Jehovah is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him. Hymns Invitation Red Songbook - Supplemental

3 Concepts of a Sinful Nature

4 Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
We understand that (generally) all men sin Does this mean that our very nature is sinful? Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

5 Doctrines of Sinful Nature
Because of Adam’s first sin: Mankind has a Sinful Nature Adam’s descendants have a flawed nature Mankind inherits the wages of Original Sin We are born guilty of Adam’s sin Mankind has a Totally Depraved nature We could not do good if we wanted to do so

6 Doctrines of Sinful Nature
If we have a Sinful Nature: Sin is not possible to avoid There is nothing we can do to be saved There is nothing we can do to be lost “Faith only” “Once saved, always saved” “Predestination”

7 Sinful Nature? Not according to the Bible Genesis 1:26-27
Ecclesiastes 7:29 Ge 1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness………27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Ec 7:29 "Behold, I have found only this, that God made men upright, but they have sought out many devices."

8 Sinful Nature? Not according to the Bible Genesis 1:26-27
Ecclesiastes 7:29 Even Jesus had our nature Hebrews 2:17-18 Heb 2:17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.

9 Original Sin? Not according to the Bible Ezekiel 18 Romans 6:23
God does not pass on guilt Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ex 32:33 The LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.”

10 Total Depravity? Not according to the Bible Romans 2:14
Man CAN control sin Ro 2:14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves,

11 Total Depravity? Not according to the Bible Romans 2:14 Acts 14:15
Man CAN control sin Ac 14:15 and saying, "Men, why are you doing these things? We are also men of the same nature as you, and preach the gospel to you that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, WHO MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM.

12 Total Depravity? Not according to the Bible Romans 2:14 Acts 14:15 James 1:13-15 Man can act with good intent and purpose Man CAN control sin Jas 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

13 So What About….. Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Context: Psalm 51:1 (To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.)

14 So What About….. Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Comparison: Psalm 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.

15 So What About….. Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Comparison: Psalm 22:10 I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother's womb You have been My God. Here David claims to have been of God since the womb. Clearly he cannot mean these things literally

16 So What About….. Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. POINT: David was lamenting his sin by expressing the sorrow that he FELT he had always been wicked Here David claims to have been of God since the womb. Clearly he cannot mean these things literally

17 So What About….. Romans 3:10 As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable” Here David claims to have been of God since the womb. Clearly he cannot mean these things literally

18 So What About….. Romans 3:10 As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one……” Original Context: Psalm 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good.” The original context is about the atheist

19 So What About….. Romans 3:10 As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one” Romans Context: Romans 3:9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin. The original context is about the atheist

20 So What About….. Romans 3:10 As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one” POINT: Neither Jews nor Gentiles (as a people) were without sin (meaning of Romans 3:23) The original context is about the atheist

21 So What About….. Romans 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. Context: Romans 8:3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, Jesus COULD NOT HAVE BEEN sinful

22 So What About….. Romans 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. POINT: Flesh can be called “sinful” so long as its desires are unchecked by the Spirit The original context is about the atheist

23 So What About….. Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— Context Romans 5:17 For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. The original context is about the atheist

24 So What About….. Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— POINT As we put on Christ for eternal life, so we may also put on Adam (disobedience) for condemnation The original context is about the atheist

25 So Why Do We All Sin? First, some people never sin Consider babies Second, some people in the Bible did not sin Jesus Job? Abel? Enoch? Job 1:1 ¶ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil.

26 So Why Do We All Sin? POINT: We do not have to sin; it is a choice We choose to do so because: We have uncontrolled desires (James 1) We live carnal lives (Romans 8:3) Ro 8:3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,

27 Conclusions Total Depravity Sinful Nature Original Sin Are not Biblical Are false doctrines

28 Conclusions Total Depravity Sinful Nature Original Sin Are not Biblical doctrines

29 Conclusions You can choose a sinless life But you need divine aid

31 Acts 22:16 Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.
