4 A. Citizen By Birth -Citizenship by Birth -born anywhere in any part of the United States -If your parents are citizens no matter where you were born (dual citizenship) -possible to be a dual citizen at birth - being born on an American Military Base

5 -naturalization – Foreign born people who choose to become citizens
B. Naturalization -naturalization – Foreign born people who choose to become citizens -5 requirements 1. -file an intent form (Declaration of Intent) – saying you want to live in the US 2. -live in U.S. for 5 years Take Citizenship classes- meet good moral characteristics 3. -be 18 years old 4. -take naturalization test - Questions about 1. reading 2. Writing 3. Speaking English 4. Basic History and Gov’t 5.-take citizenship oath Attend a Ceremony, Pledge to Obey: 1. Constitution & other laws 2. Perform Military Duties

Legal Aliens -Legal alien- Non citizen (Can stay here as long as they want) * some come here to study, work or visit relatives -immigrant- people who move permanently to a new country -have written permission to be in the U.S. Visa / Green Card- Formal permission for a non-citizen to be in a nation -can’t vote or hold public office (Because they are NOT a citizen & do not hold these rights) -have same legal rights as citizens (So can legal Aliens go around breaking laws?)

Illegal Aliens -Illegal Aliens 12 million Aliens live here ILLEGALLY -can not do anything legally in the U.S. vote, hold office, work (So how do they get around it?) -can be deported if found -The process of being expelled from a nation -why would someone come here if they would be an illegal alien??? *Side note: Congress offered CITIZENSHIP to Native Americans
