1 Integers

2 Grab a colorful piece of paper on the side table!
Bellringer September 5, 2017 Write these vocabulary words in your Glossary. Title this section “Integers” Absolute value: The distance from zero on a number line regardless of direction. |4| = 4 or |-4| = 4 Integers: Includes the set of whole numbers and their opposites. {…, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,…} Opposites: An integer and its opposite are the same distance from zero on a number line. Additive Inverses: Two integers that are opposites. The sum of an integer and its additive inverse is zero.

3 Integer Operations

4 Top Left!!

5 Independent Practice Write an integer for each situation
A profit of $9 A bank withdrawal of $50 160 feet above sea level No gains or losses on first down

6 Absolute Value It’s Always Positive Like a Superhero!
Absolute Value: The distance from zero on a number line regardless of direction. Example: |-6| = 6 Example: |6| = 6 It’s Always Positive Like a Superhero!

7 Guided Practice |3| = |-10| = |7| - |-2| = |-100| + |4| =

8 Independent Practice |14| = |-17| = |-14|+|13| = |-39| - |-14| =
|4| x |-4| = |-24| / |6| =

9 Adding Integers with same signs
To add integers with the same sign, add their absolute values. The sum is: Positive if both integers are positive. Negative if both integers are negative.

10 Adding Integers with Different signs
To add integers with different signs, subtract their absolute values. The sum is: Positive if the positive integer’s absolute value is greater. Negative if the negative integer’s absolute value is greater.

11 Adding Integers If the signs are the same: We’re friends!
Add the values of the numbers and keep their signs. If the signs are different: We’re at war! The larger-valued number will win the sign battle.

12 Adding Integers

13 Independent Practice 7 + (-1) = (-12) + 5 = (-5) + (-6) =
2 + (-15) + (-2) = (-14) + (-6) + 6 = (-17) (-3) = 7.

14 Exit Ticket Write an addition expression to describe each situation. Then find each sum and explain its meaning. Lena was scuba diving 14 meters below the surface of the water. She saw a nurse shark 3 meters above her. Where is the shark located?

15 Homework Problems -22 + (-16) = 6 +10 = 18 + (-15) = (-12) + (10) =
Complete all the problems, and complete two problems by representing it with a number line. -22 + (-16) = 6 +10 = 18 + (-15) = (-12) + (10) = -8 + (-4) + 12 = = 7 + (-19) + (-7) = Write an addition equation to describe each situation. Then find each sum and explain its meaning. A pelican starts at 60 feet above sea level. It descends 60 feet to catch a fish.
