3 Understanding Integers Graph integers and their opposites on a number line. Compare and order integers. Lesson 2.1

4 Vocabulary Negative Numbers Numbers used to represent the values less than zero. Positive Numbers Any number greater than zero. Opposites Two numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line, but on opposite sides of zero. Example: 3 and –3 are opposites

6 Vocabulary Integers Set of all positive whole numbers, their opposites and zero. Absolute Value The distance that number is from zero on a number line. Good to Know! Integers are used in everyday situations. Positive integers are associated with gains, increases, and deposits. Negative integers are associated with losses, decreases, and withdrawals. Negative integers are also used to describe something that is below sea level while positive integers describe something above sea level.

9 Good to Know! On a number line, the numbers get larger as you go from left to right. On the number line below, the integer represented by the letter A is the smallest integer marked in the number line. Point E represents the largest integer marked on the number line.
