2. RESEARCH PROBLEM:
To find the main challenges women encounter in joining the police and working as police officers; to identify contributions women make to traditional policing in Hargeisa and to find possible recommendations for improvement of the status of women in the police
METHODOLOGY:
Employed descriptive research and used qualitative research method through six Interviews with police officials, ministry of interior, Nagaad network and UNDP and three FGD for community, women police officer and men.

3. FINDINGS & RECOMMENDATIONS
Women fill a crucial gap in police work and contribute to serving women clients and victims of gender based violence. But women police officers face challenges in their career including: dressing; limited facilities; women are not well equipped; discrimination and stereotype; marriage and family work; cultural barriers; women have limited strength and knowledge on policing.
Recommendations: Awareness raising; capacity building; provide promotions; encourage young girls to join the police; address women’s challenges and establish a women-friendly police environment where women have separate rooms to work and rest.
