1 Revolution: Part 2 8th Grade

2 Things to Remember: Second Continental Congress: Meeting of delegates in Philadelphia to decide how to react to fighting at Lexington and Concord. Continental Army: created by the 2nd Continental Congress to defend the colonies from Britain, commanded by George Washington. Common Sense: Pamphlet written by Thomas Paine that criticized monarchies and convinced many people of the need to breakaway from Britain.

4 Declaring Independence: 8.23
2nd Continental Congress lead by John Hancock created a committee to write a document declaring the colonies independence. The committee was made up of John Adams, Ben Franklin, Robert Livingston, Roger Sherman, and Thomas Jefferson.

Statement that defined the colonists’ rights, outlined their complaints against Great Britain, and declared the colonies’ independence.

Basic human rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The Articles were an attempt to unify the colonies by providing them with a set of agreements concerning trade, finance, border disputes, relations with Native Americans, and other matters affecting the colonies. This was our governments outline from 1777 until Then our current form of government The Constitution took over.

9 Patriots: 8.27 Colonists who fought for independence.

10 Loyalists: 8.27 Colonists who sided with Britain in the revolution. Also called Tories.
