2 The Modern Kitchen A Answers The Kitchen has been transformed by the use of technology. Labour-saving equipment saves time and money. 1. Give three examples of modern kitchen equipment used to help prepare food. 2. Give three examples of modern kitchen equipment for cooking food. *

3 Speeding up Preparation
Answers People have less time today to prepare food. 3. What are two advantages of using electrical equipment for preparing food rather than preparing by hand? 4. Electrical equipment can be expensive. Give one other thing you need to consider when buying equipment for food preparation. * ^*#{}#*^ SHOW tom, tom.acs, 42, 68 PLAY Wave PLAY Announce2 SAY Our lifestyles today are very different to the past, for instance when our grandparents were young. The main changes have been social and economic. People generally have other expectations about what they want to do with their time and are often to busy or at work to spend hours in the kitchen. People also have more money so they can go out and buy lots more things especially for the home. People usually buy a labour saving device because it is a way to save time, money or for convenient. However, it is not very economical if it is never used because it might have cost a lot of money and to have several may cause you to need a bigger kitchen!^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain2 SAY ^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain PLAY Explain3 PLAY HandsOnHips SAY^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Think END

4 Food Mixers A Answers Food mixers have advanced from the old tin mixer shown below. Modern powered food mixers can perform many tasks. 5. There are two types of electrical food mixers. What are they? 6. Give two uses of food mixers. 7. Give one advantage to choosing a hand held electrical food mixer. * ^*#{}#*^ SHOW tom, tom.acs, 42, 68 PLAY Wave PLAY Announce2 SAY ^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain2 PLAY Explain PLAY Explain3 PLAY HandsOnHips SAY^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Think END

5 Blenders A Another name for a blender is a liquidizer.
Answers Another name for a blender is a liquidizer. 8. Give two examples of food that can be prepared in a blender. 9. What safety advice would you give someone who was going to buy a blender? * ^*#{}#*^ SHOW tom, tom.acs, 42, 68 PLAY Wave PLAY Announce2 SAY Imagine having to blend by hand. You would need to mash the food and then put it through a sieve. For making a lot a soup or making a fruit drink it would take a lot of time and perhaps you wouldn’t bother anyway. There would probably be some waste where food was too hard and there would be lots of washing up. Using an electric blender, pureeing food only takes a few seconds. However, there is a safety issue as you need to take when cleaning the inside around the sharp blades. Glass blenders are better, as plastic ones get scratched easily. They are very useful for pureeing food for a baby being weaned. ^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain2 SAY ^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain PLAY Explain3 PLAY HandsOnHips SAY^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Think END

6 Food Processors A Answers Food processors are efficient and produce good results. Food processors have various attachments for different food preparation tasks. 10. Give three tasks that can be speeded up by using a food processor. 11. Give two examples of foods that can be prepared using a food processor. * ^*#{}#*^ SHOW tom, tom.acs, 42, 68 PLAY Wave PLAY Announce2 SAY What should you look for when you buy a food processor? You can buy one for about twenty five pounds or you might buy one for one hundred and fifty pounds. It just depends on how often you think it might be used and whether you wish to pay for one which has all the expensive attachments. They need to be easy to clean , be big enough for your needs that is look at its capacity and look as if they will still look good after it has been used a lot, that is how durable it is. Food processors are very popular. They do carry out a wide range of jobs although it would be interesting to carry out an experiment to find out how long it would take to prepare food by hand against the time taken using a food processor from getting it out from the cupboard to putting it away clean and tidy.^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain2 SAY ^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain PLAY Explain3 PLAY HandsOnHips SAY^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Think END

7 Cooking Equipment A Answers Most people cook by conventional methods using an oven, hob and grill. However, many people use a variety of appliances and equipment that save labour, energy and time. 12. Give an example of cooking appliances that: (a.) save time (b.) save energy (i.e. electricity/gas) (c.) save labour. * ^*#{}#*^ SHOW tom, tom.acs, 42, 68 PLAY Wave PLAY Announce2 SAY ^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain2 PLAY Explain PLAY Explain3 PLAY HandsOnHips SAY^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Think END

9 Microwaves can be reflected, absorbed or transmitted
Microwaves at Work A Answers Microwaves are electromagnetic waves similar to X-rays, light rays and heat rays. 14. Name the process by which microwaves cook food. 15. How do microwaves heat up food? 16. What material do microwaves reflect or bounce off? Microwaves can be reflected, absorbed or transmitted by different objects. ^*#{}#*^ SHOW tom, tom.acs, 42, 68 PLAY Wave PLAY Announce2 SAY Microwaves can penetrate the food up to four centimeters. Thicker portions of food will take longer to cook and may need standing time to allow heat to be conducted from hot areas to cold spots. They may have to be turned or stirred to ensure even cooking. Most foods can be cooked in a microwave but some cakes and pastries need a conventional oven or combination oven to get the crisp texture and browning. Whole eegs cannet be cooked in a microwave as they will explode.^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain2 SAY ^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain PLAY Explain3 PLAY HandsOnHips SAY^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Think END 17. What containers can be used in a microwave? *

10 Microwave Ovens Facts A
Answers A microwave oven is simply a metal box with a magnetron valve that generates the microwaves. 18. What is fitted to doors and hinges to prevent microwaves from escaping? 19. What does the power output, e.g. 500W, indicate? ^*#{}#*^ SHOW tom, tom.acs, 42, 68 PLAY Wave PLAY Announce2 This information is found on the oven and can be matched with instructions on the food label to calculate cooking times SAY As microwave ovens have different outputs, the time they take to heat food will vary. The higher the wattage, the faster the food will cook. Food manufacturers have to take this into account and a system was developed to make sure people using different powered ovens were able to get the same result when cooking food. Labels, therefore, give instructions for cooking and standing times for different wattage ovens. ^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain2 SAY ^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Explain PLAY Explain3 PLAY HandsOnHips SAY^PAUSE=1300^ PLAY Think END 20.
