Poverty Rate : 40% or more of our population receives free and reduced lunch which makes us eligible for federal grant money under the No Child Left Behind Act, now called ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act)

9. Reading Reading Initiatives:
Professional Development: Additional training for all teachers in the most effective strategies for teaching reading.
Classroom libraries: Our goal is to have books in every classroom for students to enjoy.
Importance of Reading:
Students: students should be bringing home a book to read every night. They should also have some way to track their reading (reading envelope, agenda, reading log, etc.). 
Parents: Listen to your child read. Have your child read every night. Help your child pick out books that interest them. Sign the reading envelope or reading log every night.

10. Writing
Kindergarten – 5th grade students are participating in Writer’s Workshop every day.
Mimosa has adopted the Lucy Calkins Writing Units of Study.  Each unit aligns with the three types of writing specified in the CCSS:  narrative, informational, opinion.
Student growth will be measured using the Write Score assessment.
Teachers will receive professional development in the area of writing.
