Understanding the central premise of the article whether effectively conveyed through abstract, introduction/motivation, discussion, conclusions Assess validity of research and its specific or broad relevance if the research is fundamentally sound and what is the nature of audience targeted Extent of advance, in terms of current state of knowledge or application whether the nature of the progress is fundamental or incremental

Determine whether the article represents: Original, path-breaking research Builds upon existing work Derives partially from published work If plagiarism is involved Ascertain the suitability of the article: For the chosen journal Appropriate journal section and target audience

Check conformity with: Recommended journal style Guidelines prescribed by journal Good language characterized by: Proper grammar Suitable expressions Appropriate punctuations

Effectiveness and elegance of communication whether the writing style is clear and engaging, and characterized by brevity Article should be well organized Tables, charts or figures should be promptly comprehensible and publication ready Technical terms should be explained wherever necessary and appropriate scientific notations and units should be used

Research strategy and methodology arguments in favor of adopting and implementing both should be lucid Detailed scrutiny of the measurements and/or calculations including validity of analysis techniques and accuracy of calculations Inferences/conclusions whether these are appropriate and relevant Make a judgment about the possible reproducibility of the results

Assess whether the work described is self-contained or if further measurements are required to address the primary goals Literature survey and references whether these are appropriate do not exclude significant or relevant publications in the field The key conclusions are persuasively delineated and they are consistent with the hypotheses of the authors
