Junior Benjamin Hall

2. Information
Benjamin was born on the 9th of May 1837, his mother and father were both inmates.
Having his parents being convicts Benjamin had developed a taste for crime.
Benjamin was known as the Gentlemen bushranger for trying to avoid bloodshed, with good looks and a dressy fashion.

3. When his parents received their tickets of leave, they moved to the Hunter Valley.
Benjamin Jnr worked for Mr Samuel Clift on the doona run.
1839 he squatted on a block of land and built a little hut and raised cattle and took care of any wild horses or cattle.
In 1842 he bought a block of land and opened a butcher’s shop in Murrurundi.
1n 1856 he got married to Bridget Walsh at the age of 19.

4. 1862-
In April 1862 he and his wife broke up, she left him for another man named James Taylor.
Benjamin and Frank Gardiner met and bought a block of land.
Benjamin was arrested for participating in an armed robbery but was realised because they had no evidence.
Benjamin and Gardiner, 8 other men held up a gold escort coach near Eugowra banknotes, 2700 ounces of gold worth $28,000.

5. Hall and several others were arrested but again they were realised because the police had no evidence, but he was realised in August. Ben and Gardiner were forced to sell their property.
Benjamin and his gang held up a hotel and everyone in the town were kept captive for three days. The gang entertained the hostages and paid the hotelier and the hostages money. The goal achieved, to embarrass the local police by locking them in their own cell.

6. Benjamin was not responsible for any killings.
Many of his daring raids were to taunt the police.

7. Benjamin’s parents Benjamin Hall
Benjamin was born in Bedminster, England.
Eliza Somers
Eliza was born in Dublin, Ireland.
Both were put in jail for miner stealing offences.
They were transported to N.S.W. and got married in 1834.
