Response

  Milton mainly grew up on a farm. His father, a daydreamer, tried many things and failed. The family moved all over to try farming and oil pumping. When the family lost yet another farm, Milton’s mother turned her back on his father and left with Milton. Childhood

  After being encouraged by his mother, Milton Hershey got his first job at a printing press. He found it hard and boring. One day he broke one of the machines to get out of working. After that Milton got a job at a candy shop. It was much more fun. He loved watching how the candies were made, packaging them, and experimenting on his own. Getting A Job

  Once he had worked at the shop for four years, Milton’s mother wanted him to move on. So, he opened his very own candy shop. There he made taffy and sugar candies. Then he got sick, and had to stay in bed for a year. Finally he was forced to close his store. He then moved to Colorado to mine gold with his father, but they failed. A Place of His Own

  Next he found work at a candy company. There Milton learned how to make the perfect caramel by mixing in milk. After that he opened his own caramel store in a neighborhood without one. That too, closed, though, and he had to find other work again. Trade Secrets

  Finally, after selling caramels and candies to big places, a man form England placed a huge order that allowed Milton to buy a factory. There they produced caramels. Milton experimented lots. Then, while traveling to England, Milton ate some chocolate, which got him thinking. Then, at the world’s fair, he was introduced to chocolate-making machines, and decided he loved chocolate. Good Business

  After marrying a woman nicknamed Kitty and traveling with her, Milton made his move for chocolate. He bought twelve hundred acres of land to build his own town on. There he built a factory with a chocolate assembly line. After much experimentation with chocolate, he finally believed he had the perfect recipe and got to work. Risks

  Hershey then built a town just for his workers. It had nice houses, entertainment, a school, an orphanage and more. All the streets were named with something that had to do with chocolate. They built more and more, soon with the added profits of Kisses, after their invention. Chocolate Town

  The orphanage in Hershey was also a school for boys. Because Kitty could not have children, the Hershey’s treated them like their own. Kids of Their Own

  Hershey also opened Hershey Park, traveled a lot, made a golf course and expanded much. Kitty died later of bad health. And now the Hershey legacy lives on. More Profit
