September 7, 2017 AP BIOLOGY ROOM 407 Prof. BULALANG 8th Period TAKE A SEAT. Choose a seat for now. Take one AP Biology syllabus. Write your Name and Book Number on the Book receipt.

2 AP Biology Welcome to AP Biology

3 We’re going to work hard & have fun!
AP Biology We’re going to work hard & have fun!

4 What is AP Biology? 1st year College Biology course taken by Biology majors… AP Exam in May 14, 2018 (Monday) 8am MAY exempt you from a 1st year Bio course in college CHECK your colleges of interest!!! CHALLENGING…But Rewarding!

5 What to Expect… Amazing material to learn about Hard Work
A lecture based course…too much to learn in too little time…. Labs, too!--- At the end of every UNIT. 13 mandated labs + dissection (end of the year) Several hours each week outside of class reading, writing, studying…THINKING AP Biology is equivalent to a college Introductory Biology course for majors 2 semester course with lab PROJECTS! per marking period… 3 projects in FALL TERM 1 project in SPRING TERM  RESEARCH PAPER

6 AP Biology Supporting resources To help you learn & understand the material, you will have… lecture PowerPoints lecture notes sheets practice MC questions & essays Text: Campbell 9th ed. Supplemental text: Cliff’s AP Biology Online tutorial videos (links on my website)

7 AP Biology is a Laboratory course
Lab 1: Artificial Selection  Lab 2: Mathematical Modeling: Hardy-Weinberg Lab 3: Comparing DNA Sequences to Understand Evolutionary Relationships with BLAST Lab 7: Cell Division: Mitosis and Meiosis Lab 8: Biotechnology: Bacterial Transformation Lab 9: Biotechnology: Restriction Enzyme Analysis of DNA Lab 4: Diffusion and Osmosis Lab 5: Photosynthesis Lab 6: Cellular Respiration Lab 10: Energy Dynamics Lab 11: Transpiration Lab 12: Fruit Fly Behavior Lab 13: Enzyme Activity Lab 14: Fetal Pig Dissection

8 Lab Work Very long labs. Requires 2 periods or more.
Some days we stay after school for clean-up. ALWAYS follow proper procedure! DEMERITS! Lab partner is very essential. Write your own LAB REPORT. 8 groups with 4 students.

9 Materials Required A Binder of your choice will be needed for notes, handouts, homework, etc. Loose leaf is recommended. A calculator will be helpful in certain lab situations. It needn't be fancy, although a square root function will be helpful. Regular pencils and pens are, of course, a must. Colored pencils, markers and/or highlighters are also useful. Goggles – must have them! Not an option! Lab Coat (Wash your own coat and tag it!) Chromebook will be assigned to each student!

10 Communication I share power point files and handouts.
I communicate through . Please check your often. Pupilpath is updated everyday! My classroom: 407 Free Period: 6th

11 Course Outline Ecology Evolution Homeostasis Cell
Enzymes and Metabolism Genetics Review Post AP (Research Paper)

12 Your Grade is Based on… Tests
Hard – Designed Like AP Exam, FROM old AP Exams… Mostly UNANNOUNCED…. Classroom tests and Moving Exams (lab) Do Now Quizzes Labs HELP YOUR GRADE Class work / Participation Homework HELPS YOUR GRADE Projects Power point Presentations (Chapters) Research Paper

13 Remember Basic Classroom Rules/Procedures
Turn in stuff ON TIME! Turn-in Bin No MAKE Ups! Unless……. Lab Safety Safety contract Demerits issued for breaking rules. Honor Code

14 How do I do well… On Tests? On Essays? DO the READING!

HOMEWORK: Start reading Chapters Check your Google drive tonight for the shared power point! You may print the power point in SLIDES format. 3 slides per page.

17 About the AP Biology Exam:
The exam is 3 hours long and has two sections — multiple choice/grid-in, and free-response. You are allowed to use a four-function calculator (with square root), scientific, or graphing calculator throughout the exam. Refer to our calculator policies for more information.

18 About the AP Biology Exam:
Section I: Multiple Choice | 69 Questions | 1 hour and 30 minutes | 50% of Exam Score Multiple-Choice: 63 Questions (approx 1 min and 30 secs per Q) Discrete questions Questions in sets Grid-In: 6 Questions The grid-in questions focus on the integration of science and mathematical skills. For these responses, you need to calculate the correct answer for each question and enter it in a grid on that section of the answer sheet.

19 About the AP Biology Exam:
Section II: Free-response | 8 Questions | 1 hour and 30 minutes (includes a 10-minute reading period) | 50% of Exam Score Long Free-response (2 questions, one of which is lab or data-based) Short Free-response (6 questions, each requiring a paragraph-length argument/response)

20 SAMPLE EXAM

21 SECOND PERIOD: Diagnostic Exam on mostly Ecology and some general Biology questions. 40 QUESTIONS (1 minute per question) Multiple Choice.
