1 Shift instructions August 16, 2017 Antoni Aduszkiewicz
University of Warsaw Faculty of Physics

2 Detailed instructions are printed in the counting house, and can be also found in the TWiki page.
This presentation is an overview. Each new shifter is obliged to take one training shift by joining another shifters in their tasks.

3 General rules Your and your colleagues' safety has the highest priority in all actions: follow the CERN and NA61 safety rules. Keep order in the counting houses. Return instruments/equipment used by you to their proper place. At least one shift-taker should stay in the control room. One shifter from the morning shift and one from the evening shift should participate in the run meeting (starting at 16:15) Write about all activities in the elog Discuss the status with the previous shift; pass information to the next shift!

4 Instructions to follow
General rules for the shift takers List of tasks for the shift crew Checklists: NA61 shift check sheet TPC currents checklist Magnet checklist

5 Electronic Logbook Go to DAQ terminal, E-log display workspace
At the beginning of the shift create a new entry in Shift logbook Enter comments whenever relevant event occurs with Edit button (beam/no beam from SPS, access/end of access, etc). Never leave e-log in the editing mode. Submit the changes immediately. Ask experts about their current activities. On each terminal computer there is Printscreen- to-elog icon At the end of shift write a short Shift Summary Data taking actions are automatically logged, no need for human logging. Properly fill the electronic ”Run sheet” of RUNCONTROL

6 Checklists The main shift checklist guides you through the activities

7 RunControl Use buttons on the top to control DAQ application
Make sure the shifter names and run sheet information are correct Check regularly the messages window for errors.

8 Target inserting/removing
Regular target holder Go downstairs, vis-à-vis the gas cage Operated by three valves Follow the instructions printed below the control panel Vertex detector target holder Use an application to insert and remove the target Detailed instructions to be prepared before the run in October Procedure to change the target status Stop the run Move target physically Update information in RunControl Start new run

9

10 Data taking Supervision of the data taking is the main shift responsibility. Check often if DAQ application is running correctly Take target removed once per shift, about 10% of the total statistics (target needs to be moved using remote system located downstairs) Take pedestal run each 4–6h. If possible, take pedestals between target in runs. You can take pedestals when there is no beam. Restart run if it has more than 100k events, or it lasts for more than 2h. Make sure that the run information in the RunControl application is correct! If you make a mistake, write it in the elog.

11 Trigger rates Write selected averaged trigger parameters to the shift checklist each hour If the T2 rate or T2/T1 ratio drops significantly, contact BEAM expert Send a screenshot of the triggers page to elog once per shift Glossary: T2 - interaction trigger T1 - beam trigger

12 Spill structure If the spill structure becomes not flat for longer time, call CCC Send a screenshot to elog once per shift

13 SPS page1 Beam symmetry (should be close to 100%) Primary
beam intensity SPS operator phones

14 Beam control If the beam intensity decreases or the beam disappears completely: No beam on the beam TV (without explanation) → complain to 77500 Beam intensity drops in TV → complain to 77500 Spill structure is not flat → complain to 77500 otherwise call BEAM mobile (161331)

15 Event Browser Is the picture refreshing several seconds? If not:
Is DAQ running? Is there beam on the beam TV? Is the number of counts in S1 and T2 triggers stable? Are there tracks in all sectors?

16 BPD positions Go to: http://na61-qa.cern.ch → online monitor
Write the mean BPD position each hour in the main checklist If the position changes by more than 5 mm call BEAM expert

17 PSD status All 44 modules should be green on both displays (HV and T)
If not, follow printed instructions In case of any doubts call PSD mobile:

18 Java Monitor Check the main page of the Java Monitor each 15 minutes
Change of the measurement may signalise a problem If some values stop being updated, this may be due to DCS problem Check all pages each 2 hours

19 Software control Is DAQ running correctly?
Is DCS (Detector Control system) running? Visual control of TPC signals in the Event Browser Do the Beam Position Detectors (BPD) histograms stay in the same place? Are trigger rates stable? Is PSD status OK in all modules?

20 Hardware control Fill three checklists:
Are TPC currents stable (check in spill and outside of spill)? Check magnet currents and cryogenics status Check the gas system status (downstairs) Unusual noise? Water leak?
