The Procedure for the Burnt Offering
Bring the offering to ‘make atonement’ Interaction with the priest? (Psalm 51) Press hand on the head (Lev 16:21) Animal is killed by the worshipper and the blood is sprinkled Animal is skinned, prepared, cleaned The offering is completely consumed “to cover, to wipe clean, to pay a ransom”

The burnt offering was the commonest of all the OT sacrifices
The burnt offering was the commonest of all the OT sacrifices. Its main function was to atone for man's sin by propitiating God's wrath. In the immolation of the animal, most commonly a lamb, God's judgment against human sin was symbolized and the animal suffered in man's place. The worshipper acknowledged his guilt and responsibility for his sins by pressing his hand on the animal's head and confessing his sin. The lamb was accepted as the ransom price

for the guilty man. The daily use of the sacrifice in the worship of the temple and tabernacle was a constant reminder of man's sinfulness and God's holiness. So were its occasional usages after sickness, childbirth, and vows. In bringing a sacrifice a man acknowledged his sinfulness and guilt. He also publicly confessed his faith in the Lord, his thankfulness for past blessing, and his resolve to live according to God's holy will all the days of his life. (Gordan Wenham, NICNT)

The Purpose of the Burnt Offering
To sooth God’s anger over sin Job 1:5 “When they finished having their parties, Job would send for them in order to cleanse them from sin. He would get up early in the morning and sacrifice burnt offerings for each of them. Job thought, ‘My children may have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.’”

The Purpose of the Burnt Offering
Gen 8:20-21 “Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And when the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, the LORD said in his heart, ‘I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth.’”

The Purpose of the Burnt Offering
Job 42:8 “Now therefore take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and offer up a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.”

The Purpose of the Burnt Offering
2 Sam 24:25 “And David built there an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD responded to the plea for the land, and the plague was averted from Israel.” Voluntary act of worship Signifies complete devotion to God Provides something for the priests

The Meaning for us Today
Jesus is our burnt offering John 3:36 “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” Ephesians 5:2 “And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
12
The Meaning for us Today
1 Peter 1:18-19 “Realize that you weren't set free from the worthless life handed down to you from your ancestors by a payment of silver or gold which can be destroyed. Rather, the payment that freed you was the precious blood of Christ, the lamb with no defects or imperfections.” 1 Thess 5”9 “For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
13
The Meaning for us Today
We should be completely devoted to God Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
14
The Meaning for us Today
Romans 12:1-2 “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
