fbincaaa NATIONAL INITIATIVE PROGRAM National Initiative Program FBINCAAA can provide assistance to the participating chapters Program can be implemented at all FBICAAA chapters nationwide Program is focused on educating the public about the FBI and law enforcement Program encourages a diverse population of participants Program partners with the local FBI field office Program meets with FBI Director’s mission of engaging younger generations and diverse groups

3 What is the FBI Students Academy?
A series of seminars that educate university students on the day-to-day operations of the FBI The seminars explains the various divisions within the FBI, what their roles are and how they execute their responsibilities Potential topics can include but not limited to: Civil Rights Counter-Terrorism Cyber-Intrusion Crisis Negotiation Counter-Intelligence and Espionage Topics are catered towards college students and current events After completion of the FBI Students Academy, there is a graduation ceremony where Certificates of Completion are awarded

4 HOW was THE FBI STUDENTS ACADEMY CREATED?
When I was a high school student, I became aware of the FBI Citizens Academy through my Mother and Father who had attended It peaked my interest to the point where I asked if I could attend I was too young to attend but was able to attend some of the FBI Citizens Academy events My interest continued through high school and college When I was in college I met an FBI agent and in discussion expressed my idea of creating an FBI organization on campus Through partnership with the FBI, Springfield Field Office and the University of Illinois, I created the certificate program - FBI Students Academy The FBI Students Academy was a combination of the FBI’s Community Relations Executive Seminar Training and the FBI Citizens Academy

5 Structure AND REQUIREMENTS of program
In partnership with the FBI Field Office of your Chapter, develop eight (8) seminar topics (between 1.5 to 2 hours long; include Q&A) Create and develop a social event once a month (can be modified based on timing of program) Create and develop a professional event once a month (can be modified based on timing of program) REQUIREMENTS Must attend six out of the eight seminars (you can miss one a semester) Attend one social and one professional event throughout the semester Notes If you miss more than one seminar, you must talk to the coordinator and present your reasoning so a determination can be made about whether you can continue the program There may be one or two extra optional seminars which you could use to make up a seminar if you missed more than one.

6 Structure of Executive Board
President: Main point of correspondence with FBI, organizes seminars, selects topics, engages with students and in charge of reports. Vice President Internal: In charge of logistics for seminars and all member questions and requirements. Also oversees: Treasurer: In charge of finances for club, sponsoring events, and all fundraisers. Secretary: Takes notes at each meeting, sends out and social media reminders, updates social media on organization activity and keeps track of attendance. Vice President External: Responsible for outreach to university career center and advisors, as well as promotion of organization. Social Director: Coordinates social events once a month for students. Professional Director: Coordinates professional events once a month for students.

8 SUCCESS - THE FIRST FBI STUDENTS ACADEMY
First program was implemented at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign Worked in partnership with the FBI Springfield Field Office A planning committee was formed by responses to posting on Facebook groups The organization became immensely popular through word of mouth, flyers, and advisor s. First informational meeting attracted over 100 people First seminar attracted around 60 people, with a steady number of around students at every seminar At the end of the program, some participants ended up with careers at the FBI

9 Survey Results 45 Students completed all requirements and graduated the academy. 40% of students were from minority backgrounds. 54% of students were female. How confident were you in your basic knowledge of the FBI BEFORE the Academy on a scale of 1 being not confident at all and 5 being extremely confident? Average answer: 1.93 How confident are you in your basic knowledge of the FBI AFTER the Academy on a scale of 1 being not confident at all and 5 being extremely confident? Average answer: 4 How interested were you in the FBI BEFORE the Academy on a scale of 1 being no interest and 5 being extremely interested? Average answer: 3.8 How interested are you in the FBI AFTER the Academy on a scale of 1 being no interest and 5 being extremely interested? Average answer: 4.5

Why or why not? “I learned so much on what the FBI does and it made me excited about potentially joining..” “It has opened another career potential for me.” “I didn't know much about the opportunities available before and the program did a good job of showing the variety of areas.” “It opened my perception of what the FBI does.” “It has made coming a special agent for the FBI my ultimate career goal.”

Why or why not? “Yes, I definitely believe there are students at other schools that would love to learn more about the FBI whether or not they would like to work for the FBI in the future.” “I think it would definitely be beneficial to students like me that may want to learn more about the FBI.” “I think that sounds fantastic. Other people should get this opportunity.” “Yes I think this organization would allow many other students the opportunity to better understand the FBI.” “Yes!!!!!!!”

13 Roles of Partners Student’s Academy Local FBICAAA Chapter
Meet with Field Office COS to present program Working together with the local FBI office, determine local university for program Contact alumni of citizens academy in area and encourage outreach to the college community. Once a student has been identified to create the chapter, provide planning support to FBI for planning and execution Act as liaison between the Student’s Academy and the FBI as the coordinator of the program Develop and execute graduation event Local FBI Field Office Work in partnership with the local FBICAAA chapter to select the university If possible, join with the FBICAAA representative when presenting program to University students. Develop eight seminar topics for the program Recruit presenters for the seminars and develop any associated study materials Assist in the execution of the program Participate and assist in the graduation event Student’s Academy Create an executive board for the Academy Register as a student organization of the university Contact career center and advisors to spread word of program Correspond with Local Field office to pan and execute seminars Record membership attendance and statistics Encourage initiative in other universities in the area

Execute FBI Students’ Academy in 80% of FBICAAA Chapters Strive for diverse participation across as many ethnic groups possible Increase participant’s knowledge and understanding about the FBI and what they do Inspire participants to consider careers in the FBI and law enforcement Achieve 100% graduation rate MEASURABLE OBJECTIVES Track FBICAAA chapter’s participation in the program Track the ethnicity of participants in the program Through surveys, determine the effectiveness and sustainability of the program Provide FBI applications at graduation to determine future prospects
