2 Learning Target: Students will read the poem “Still I Rise” and identify the author’s purpose for using imagery and symbols. Language Objective: Students will use the SOAPStone method to aid in analyzing the poem. Success Criteria: I can identify imagery and symbols in the poem. I can identify the author’s message in the poem. I can analyze how the figurative language develops the poem’s theme. 3 Figurative Language Imagery- vivid, description language, that appeals to one or more of the senses. Figurative language is often used to create mental images. Example: The gushing brook stole its way down the lush green mountains, dotted with tiny flowers in a riot of colors and trees coming alive with gaily chirping birds. Symbols- Something that represents something, especially a material object used to represent something abstract. Example: The lamb is a symbol of innocence.

Name “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou SOAPSTone: Imagery Symbols Analyze the poem using SOAPStone. Answer all of the questions provided in thorough, detailed, and complete sentences. Remember, this assignment is being graded! Identify one example of symbolism in the poem. Provide the quote, then explain why Angelou included the symbol. How does it develop the message of the poem? On the back on the paper, create a visual representation of the symbol identified. Identify two examples of imagery in the poem. Provide the quote, then explain what sensory details Angelou included to develop the imagery. Why does Angelou include the imagery? How does it develop the message of the poem? Define unknown words. Highlight similes in the poem in yellow. Choose one simile in the poem. -What is the poet trying to express by using the simile identified? Discuss the signifcance of this imagery and what is revealed. Highlight a symbol in blue. -Discuss the signifcance of this imagery and what is revealed. Identify the speaker of the poem and the intended audience. Identify the tone of the poem. What diction supports the tone? How? Identify the author’s message. Write a thematic statement for the poem.
