2. Considering a career in Engineering?
Grades Required:
Engineering is a rewarding and varied discipline.
Entry requirements vary depending on the type of course/apprenticeship and discipline of engineering.
Students will usually need a C or above in Maths, English and Science at GCSE alongside a technology subject.
Post 16 qualifications such as Product Design, ICT, Computing, Maths and Science are favoured when applying for a university place or an apprenticeship.
Academic ability is not the only requirement.
Practical skills, creative thinking, an enquiring mind, the ability to communicate well and perseverance are all essential. 

3. Considering a career in Engineering?
Application Process
Applications to university are via UCAS, whilst major engineering companies advertise apprenticeships directly through their websites. Smaller, local engineering companies often welcome well constructed CVs highlighting knowledge, skills and personal attributes.
The North West has many local employers (MGS Plastics, Gretone) and international engineering companies (BAE, Leyland Trucks).
Some engineering companies offer different career based learning opportunities such as apprenticeships, post graduate and training schemes. Take a look at individual employers for more details.
Once you have decided on where you would like to apply, you will need to complete your application through UCAS/ submit an application or CV.

4. Considering a career in Engineering?
Choosing your course/apprenticeship:
Choose a course or apprenticeship based on your interests and strengths. Options include: Design, Manufacture, CAD/CAE, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Automotive.
Some courses and apprenticeships are accredited by the Engineering Council, on completion you are given membership to professional bodies such as the IET and with further career evidence you can work towards EngTech, IEng or even CEng professional status.

5. Considering a career in Engineering?
Work Experience :
Look at the engineering council website and engineering professional bodies such as IET or IMechE for opportunities.
Attend open days organised by engineering companies and engineering roadshow events. Utilise engineering contacts such as a family member or a family friend to gain experience working on engineering projects.
Carr Hill Sixth Form Centre can help students to gain work experience places within local engineering companies.

6. Career Preparation Programme
As part of the Engineering Preparation programme as a student at Carr Hill Sixth, you will benefit from:
The sixth form will arrange work experience in a suitable setting.
The sixth form will arrange for me to work with existing students studying engineering and they will become your mentor.
The sixth form will arrange regular university visits to take part in workshops and to meet tutors.
The sixth form will help me prepare a portfolio of experience to help you secure a university place or apprenticeship.
