How could we use this dial to work out 42 ÷ 3?    Draw out splitting 42 into 30 and 12 - see next slide. Original of the Number Dials graphic can be found and adapted at: © Hamilton Trust Stepping Up Term Week 5 Day 2

3 Mental Division – Direct Teaching
A garage has 42 wheels; there are 3 on each trike. How many trikes can they put wheels on? 42 ÷ 3 = ? Multiplication with holes… So ☐ x 3 = 42 10 x 3 = Start with what you know 12 How many wheels left? 4 x 3 = Use what you know 0 How many wheels left? 14 trikes can be fitted with wheels, and there will be 0 spare wheels. Agree that are ten 3s in 30 and four 3s in 12, so there are fourteen 3s in 42.  Use the animation to gradually reveal working out. © Hamilton Trust Stepping Up Term Week 5 Day 2
