1 Relation between the fractional catabolic rate (FCR) for plasma LDL and the number of LDL receptors on fibroblasts in patients with FH. The values for the FCR were derived from studies of the turnover of 125I-apo-LDL in the plasma of 6 normal subjects, 6 FH heterozygotes, and 11 FH homozygotes. These turnover studies were performed by Bilheimer et al.320 and by Myant and coworkers.321, 349 The number of LDL receptors per cell was calculated from experiments in which maximal 125I-LDL binding was measured at 4°C in actively growing fibroblasts that were deprived of LDL for 48 h.
