1 Percentile lines for the relationship between insulin sensitivity (SI) and the first-phase insulin response (AIRglucose) based on data from 93 normal subjects.45 Mean data from four other studies are plotted. Thirteen healthy older subjects demonstrate that aging is associated with a reduction in β-cell function.51 Reduced β-cell function is also manifest in 8 women with a history of gestational diabetes (GDM),68 11 women with polycystic ovarian disease (PCO) and a family history of type 2 diabetes,59 and in 14 subjects with a first-degree relative with type 2 diabetes.4 The reduction in β-cell function in these groups is compatible with their high risk of subsequently developing type 2 diabetes.
