2. Progressive Movement Flourished between 1900 and the start of WWI
Took their name from their belief in Progress
Borrowed ideas from the Populists & labor movement, they were still very different
Mainly middle class city dwellers (not farmers and workers).
Their activities reflected the rising influence of the middle class (writers, lawyers, ministers, and college professors provided their leadership).

Primary goal was to correct political and economic injustices
Appalled at the increasing inequalities between the wealthy and poor
Did not oppose industrialization, but wanted to use governmental power to correct the bad
Felt that they needed to reform the government, which had become very corrupted by big business and political machines.

4. The Roots of the Progressive Movement
Combination of Protestant Leaders, muckrakers, Populists, and the reaction of the educated middle class to abuses in industry and government led to the Progressive Movement
Felt Threatened by the rise of big business, large labor unions, and corrupt political bosses.
Acted out of a sense of moral responsibility, based on religious beliefs
Placed great confidence in the ability of using a scientific approach to solve social problems.

5. Social Gospel Movement
New social movement that was spearheaded by Protestant clergymen.
Called for social reform-including the abolition of child labor and safer working conditions.
Objected the harsh realities of unregulated free enterprise
Emphasized the ancient idea that each man was his brother’s keeper
Did not accept social problems as God’s will.

6. Social Gospel Movement
Groups like the Salvation Army emphasized the Christian duty to help those who were less fortunate.
Believed Christians were being called upon by God to perform acts of charity and goodness.
Felt it was sinful not to rise to the challenge of reducing human suffering
Social Gospel Movement strongly supported the Temperance Movement (banning of alcohol)

7. Muckrakers
With the expansion of cities, newspapers and magazines reached larger audiences.
Investigative reporters, writers, and social scientists exposed the abuses of industrial society and government corruption. The spread of newspapers and magazines made this new journalism popular.
Became known as Muckrakers… because they raked up the “muck” or dirt in American life.
Examined the rise of industry and the abuses that had often led to the accumulation of large fortunes.
Also examined business practices affecting consumers and the lives of the very poor.

8. Upton Sinclair: The Jungle
In his novel, The Jungle, described the unsanitary practices of the meatpacking industry.
“The meat would be shoveled into carts, and the man who did the shoveling would not trouble to lift out a rat even when he saw one – there were things that went into sausage in comparison with which a poisoned rat was just a tidbit. There was no place for the men to wash their hands before they ate dinner, and so they made practice of washing them in the water that was to be ladled into the sausage”
