3 Foundation Stage The Early years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S) the stage of education for children from birth to the end of Reception year. This creates a National Curriculum for 5s and under. It is based on the recognition that children learn best through play and active learning. There are 7 areas of learning and development. All areas of learning are reflected inside and outdoors.

6 PSED – How can you help? You can help by encouraging your children to be independent, fastening their own coats, using the toilet independently and washing their hands. Playing games which encourage sharing and turn taking to build their social skills.

Singing songs and nursery rhymes Taking time to listen to them talking about things they have done and answering any questions they have. Use ambitious vocabulary and encourage use of new words; “Let’s munch our lunch” “Let’s scoff our lunch” “Let’s devour our lunch”

10 Physical Development – How can you help?
Give children time to run, jump, climb and play outdoors Encourage children in activities such as building, drawing and threading beads all of which develop manipulative skills. Support children to dress independently and talking to them about healthy choices.

17 Sharing Books with Children
“You’re never to old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” Dr Seuss Reading books (stories, information books, newspapers, magazines, comics), encouraging your child to join in and talk about books. Using expression Story prediction Visiting the library

18 Handwriting Modelling correct letter formation and pencil grip. Talk about what you are writing and for what purpose. Show that you can make mistakes and that its ok to make mistakes. Encourage children to write at home, help you with list making, signing their own name on cards.

19 Mathematical Development
Maths Mastery – Children are encouraged to physically represent mathematical concepts. Objects and pictures are used to demonstrate and visualise abstract ideas, alongside numbers and symbols. Mathematical concepts are explored in a variety of representations and problem- solving contexts to give pupils a richer and deeper learning experience. 20 Mathematical Development – How can you help?
Talk about shapes you see in the environment Comparing things which are heavy, light, long or short. Exploring numbers in the environment Singing counting songs and rhymes Counting, adding and subtracting… everything!!

21 Understanding the World – How can you help?
Talking about the places you go and the things your see. Answering and asking questions – What if…? Why..? How did you …? Encouraging children to join in with everyday activities – washing up, cooking, shopping, helping in the garden…

Talk to your child about their imaginative play and join in if possible. Encourage them to be flexible in their thinking and use of materials and praising them for their efforts or ideas as well as the end product.

27 Foundation Stage Profile
At the end of the Reception we will complete an assessment which is known as the EYFS Profile. Based on what we have observed during your child’s time in the EYFS. The information collected is used to evaluate how your child is doing in the 7 areas of learning and development.
