1. Black Land - The 'black land' was the fertile land on the banks of the Nile. The ancient Egyptians used this land for growing their crops. This was the only land in ancient Egypt that could be farmed because a layer of rich, black silt was deposited there every year after the Nile flooded. 2. cataract – a waterfall or rapids in a river 3. delta – a fan-shaped area of silt near where a river flows into the sea

4. savanna - a grassy plain in tropical and subtropical regions, with few trees. 5. shadoof – a bucket attached to a long pole used to transfer river water to storage basins 6. papyrus – a reed plant that grew wild along the Nile; used to weave rope, sandals, baskets, and river rafts. Later, used to make paper. 7. desert – a dry, barren region that is usually sandy and without trees

8. Red Land - The 'red land' was the barren desert that protected Egypt on two sides. These deserts separated ancient Egypt from neighboring countries and invading armies. 9. hieroglyphics – a writing system made up of a combination of pictures and sound symbols 10. dynasty – a line of rulers from one family 11. pharaoh – ruler of ancient Egypt

embalming – the process of treating a body to keep it from decaying 16. mummification - embalmment and drying a dead body and wrapping it as a mummy

7 17. mummy - (especially in ancient Egypt) a body of a human being or animal that has been ceremonially preserved by removal of the internal organs, treatment with natron and resin, and wrapping in bandages.

18. pyramid – a great stone tomb built for an Egyptian pharaoh Rosetta Stone - a black basalt stone found in that bears an inscription in hieroglyphics, demotic characters, and Greek and is celebrated for having given the first clue to the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphics.

9 In the social pyramid of ancient Egypt the pharaoh and those associated with divinity were at the top, and servants and slaves made up the bottom. Their leaders, called pharaohs, were believed to be gods in human form. They had absolute power over their subjects.
