Secretary of Treasury – Albert Gallatin Federal government made income through the sale of western lands and through tariffs on imports. Jefferson did the following while he was in office: Lowered the nation’s debt Kept US at peace Purchased the Louisiana Territory Cut the federal budget

After going to war, France and Britain began seizing U.S. merchant ships because both nations wanted to keep the U.S. from supplying the enemy. Non-intercourse act allowed trade with all nations except France and Great Britain. War Hawks Wanted to go to war with Great Britain. Henry Clay was the War Hawk from Kentucky. New England shippers were called Yankee.

13 War of 1812 William Henry Harrison was the governor of the Indiana Territory and won the Battle of Tippecanoe. Tecumseh was the Native American chief of the Shawnee who was killed at the Battle of Thames. The War of 1812 was fought between the U.S. and Great Britain

14 War of 1812 Battles Dolley Madison was credited with saving many historical documents from the White House before it was burned to the ground. Aug 24, 1814 Britian captured Washington D.C and burned the White House to the ground.

15 War of 1812 Fort McHenry Battle of New Orleans
Battle of Fort McHenry was where the U.S. held off the Great Britain attack for 25 hours. Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner during this battle. Battle of New Orleans This battle was fought after the Treaty Ghent was signed in Belgium in December 1814 ending the war. Andrew Jackson won a decisive battle that made him a national hero.

16 Fort McHenry At Fort McHenry, which was along the Baltimore harbor, the US troops held off the British for 25 hours causing the British to retreat. Francis Scott Key, a Washington lawyer, watched this aboard a prisoner of war ship, wrote a few lines of poetry that eventually became the National Anthem.

17 Fort McHenry Francis Scott Key ( ) wrote “The Star- Spangled Banner” on September 14, He had been detained on a British warship and watched through the night as the British bombarded Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. 20 Battle of Plattsburgh/ Lake Champlain
After the defeat here, Great Britain believed the war was too costly and decided to end the fighting.

21 Battle of New Orleans

22 Treaty of Ghent On December 24, the Treaty of Ghent is signed ending the war but actually settled nothing. It did not deal with the rights of American sailors and neither side gained or lost territory. The war in the field continues until mid-February.

23 Benefits of the War of 1812 The US was treated with respect by other countries. Great pride in our country…nationalism. American ships enjoyed the freedom of the seas. American experience increased pride and sense of national identity. Native Americans forced to give up land in Ohio Valley and Northwest Territory. Settlement of West increases.
