1 Minutemen Weekly Minutemen Slips Past Walsingham
Today was a sloppy game for both teams. Neither team was able to really do anything that was soccer related. I don't think I remember one sequence of 4 passes or more by both teams. The reason??? I wish someone could tell me. It was hot. The field was hard. The ball did have air in it...who can know such things???Anyways, the match was tough. Both teams slugged at each other to earn every inch that they could. The soccer was ugly but the work rate was high. In a grinding game like this was, the team that got lucky was going to win.Walsingham struck first. In the 32' they were able to break through our backline and find the back of the net. Cody did well to save the initial shot but the rebound hit the post with just enough backspin to enter our goal. A few minutes later WA was at it again, but this time the post was kind to us, as it went out for a goal kick.At halftime it became evident to us that we were not going to be able to just show up. They wooped our hind quarters for the first 40 minutes and we needed to increase our work and attitudes in order to grind to the win.We showed signs of life in the second half as we were able to generate a few opportunities early that the goalkeeper did well to keep out. But it was our constant defensive and midfield pressure that was our savior today. Keeping them bunkered down for most of the half we put just enough pressure on their back line that one of them made a mistake. In the 56' we were fortunate to be the recipients of an own goal. A simple ball played in behind the defender with Hodges chasing him down. He just simply played the ball past his goalkeeper into his own net. A blunder to say the least but it was what we needed to get back into the game.We nearly took the lead 10 minutes later as Stephen was able to beat the defenders and draw the goalkeeper to the near post. The ball in was right on Bobbies chest but he was unable to finish from close range. It seemed like we were not going to be able to get another one and needed some more luck otherwise overtime was calling our names. With 3 minutes to go we got a throw in deep into our attacking end. Luke played the ball in the box. Somehow in the mad scramble for the ball Stephen was able to bang it off of the keepers legs and into the net to finish the game off! The feeling was of relief, as I felt we stole this one away.Sometimes you have to win ugly! Coach Aaron Hoxie
