1 Year One ‘Stories’ Curriculum News – Spring 2017
Language, Literacy and Communication Skills We will consolidate work covered in the Autumn Term. and continue to learn new sounds. Children will be reminded about full stops, capital letters, commas and exclamation marks and expected to check their work. We will also talk about common and proper nouns. As part of our topic we will look at reference books, story writing, poetry, characters and settings. Reading groups will take place on a daily basis. Continue to practise rainbow words. Mathematical Development Work will cover breaking and making numbers in to 10’s and units up to 20 and beyond. Children will add 10 and takeaway 10 from a single digit number and teen number. Children will derive near doubles using doubles already covered. Practical and enhanced activities will develop children's understanding. Children will compare two, then more masses by direct comparison using standard and non standard measurements. We will practise telling the time and discuss the passing of time. Children will use 2D shapes to make. Describe and continue repeated patterns. Curriculum News – Spring 2017 Knowledge and Understanding of the World We will investigate materials. How they change when they are heated and cooled and learn about different types of materials. We will make predictions and explain why things could have happened. We will look at directions and how to programme a beebot. Year One ‘Stories’ Welsh Language Development Incidental Welsh is used throughout the school day. Children will be encouraged to ask to go to the toilet in welsh. We will talk about the clothes they wear and the journeys they take. Creative Development Children will be encouraged to respond to sounds through movement. They will discuss their music compositions and say whether it was too fast/slow/could we play it louder. Clap or tap a steady beat in time with others. We will look at the work of Andy Goldsworthy and create our own art work. Personal, Social Development Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity The school promises and rules will be reinforced and the traffic light system continued. Children will also work through a theme called ‘Going for Goals’ which will look at children’s personal goals and what they need to do to achieve them. Physical Development Play to Learn will continue to support the children’s physical development skills. Children will be encouraged to sequence a short series of linked actions using balance and direction. We will also discuss changes that occur to our body during exercise.

Language, Literacy and Communication Skills Talk about the topic with your child. Change home reader books on a weekly basis. Talk about the sound of the week . What words can they think of that includes it? Talk about something you have lost or found. Tell children stories and talk about the characters /settings and plot. Mathematical Development Encourage your child to use mental maths at every opportunity. Talk about how different items/people/animals are weighed. Let your children use money in real life situations. Talk to your child about the time and the passing of time. Look at and talk about the homework on a weekly basis. Curriculum News – Spring 2017 Knowledge and Understanding of the World Talk about materials around the house and what they are used for. Talk about different places visited. Creative Development Encourage the children to experiment with colour, textures and different ways of creating art. Sing songs, rhymes at any opportunity. Clap, tap rhythms. Welsh Language Development Highlight the Welsh language when out and about. Share any songs with your child. If you want any phrases ask your class teacher. Year One ‘Stories’ How you can help Personal, Social Development Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity Talk about your goals and how you intend to achieve them. Talk about goals you have achieved and what helped you reach your goal. Continue to discuss different feelings you have and how you deal with them. Physical Development Encourage children to play with balls of different sizes. Talk about the movements they can make when out and about. Encourage children to run, jump, skip, hop with increasing control.
