5 History Established: in 1984 by Allen Powell and Jon Poteat
not for profit organization recognizes outstanding students in vocational education. improves the image of vocational education As the image of career and technical education improved & the word “vocational” became obsolete, the name of the organization was changed in 2003 to National Technical Honor Society. In the early eighties, Allen Powell, Director of Swofford Vocational Center and Jon Poteat, Guidance Counselor saw too little being done to lift up outstanding career and technical students. They realized that in spite of all the rhetoric about the poor, negative image associated with career and technical education and the critical need for student recognition, no national initiative existed. Out of concern for their outstanding students at the Center they were motivated to find a way to recognize these students and do something about the stigma associated with career and technical education. The National Technical Honor Society was chartered in November1984 as a not for profit national organization
