1 National 5 Biology Key Area 4: Reproduction
Sexual and asexual reproduction and their importance for survival of species

2 Let’s see what you can remember from S3 (or S2!) biology!

3 Male Reproductive System Identify structures A - D
B C D

4 Female Reproductive System Identify structures A - D
B C D

5 Match the word to the definition!
A. Reproduction involving only one parent. Offspring genetically identical to parents. 1. Zygote 2. Asexual Reproduction B. The fusion of the nuclei of the two gametes to produce a zygote. 3. Sexual Reproduction C. A fertilised egg cell N4 need to know the difference asexual and sexual. N5’s only need sexual reproduction (but all were taught it in S3). D. Reproduction involving two parents. All offspring are different to the parents. 4. Fertilisation

6 Natural Asexual Reproduction in Plants Name the method of asexual reproduction AND give an example of a plant that carries out this method A. C. B. Nat 4 Runners Strawberry plants Spider plants Tubers Potato plants Sweet potato plants Bulbs Garlic plants Tulips

7 Identify the features of sexual reproduction…..
Involves the processes of pollination (plants) and fertilisation (plants and animals) Involves the production of runner and bulbs. Introduces (genetic) variation into populations Produces clones Allows beneficial characteristics of the parent to be passed on From N4 support notes: Sexual reproduction is important for introducing variation in a population and enables species to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Asexual reproduction does not produce variation but it allows populations to grow quickly. Allows populations to grow quickly Involves gametes Produces seeds in plants

8 Name the Parts !!! You will see a picture of a flower with part of it coloured in. As a group you have to decide which part of the flower it is and hold up the answer on your white board. N5 only – although all were taught it in S3 so all could do it.
