2. Volcano Definition and History
History: The word Volcano comes from the Romans. The God of Fire, Vulcan, was believed to have resided on the island of Volcano where he forged weapons for the Gods of Olympus.
Definition: 1. An opening in the crust of the Earth from which magma and gases escape to the surface. 2. The mountain that is formed from volcanic processes.

3. Classification
Active- currently erupting or have erupted recently. (greater than 500 volcanoes)
Dormant- not currently erupting but are considered likely to do so. Mt. St Helens was dormant for 123 years before it erupted in 1980.
Extinct- (dead) volcanoes have not erupted in recent history and are not likely to erupt.

a cauldron-like volcanic feature on large central volcanoes, a special sort of volcanic crater (from one to several kilometers in diameter), formed when a magma chamber was emptied. The depression then originated either in very big explosive eruptions or in erosion and collapse of the magma chamber roof. (
