1 How Can heavy Objects fly ?
Outcomes 204-2,205-5,207-2 Explore the effects of an airfoil and it’s angle of attack.

2 Vocabulary Airfoil a streamlined shape with a rounded front edge and trailing back edge, designed to help lift or control an aircraft Angle of attack: the angle created by the tilt of the an aircraft’s wing: the wing’s edge forms one side of the angle and the air stream forms the other. Leading edge: the front edge of a sing, usually rounded Trailing edge: the back edge of a wing, usually sharply tapered.

3 forces What happens if gravity and lift are balanced ?
What happens if thy are unbalanced ? What has to happen to unbalance them ?

4 Wing design It is not just the airplane engine that help it fly it is also wing design. Wing design can force the air to flow so that pressure builds up underneath and the force of LIFT is greater than the force of gravity. Wing design

5 Try this ( PAGE 20 in student text)
You need a sheet of paper Ruler Masking tape Mrs. G has a hair dryer and will come around with it.

6 Think about this What happens to the paper as the air flows over it ? Why do you think this happens ? What happens if you change the angle of the hair dryer ? What happened when you changed the shape of the curve on the top half of the sheet ? If you are waiting for your turn read page 21

7 Now We will watch a min video as a whole class on the dynamics of flight.
