Session 2 By Z.Alam WPGH SESSION2SESSION2

Introduction: (How to make a plane fly) -Experiment 1 -Experiment 2 -Game (the game is designed especially for HPPS) -Evaluation Learning intentions:

All planes have wings. The wings are shaped with smooth surfaces. The smooth surfaces are slightly curved from the front or leading edge, to the back or trailing edge. Air moving around the wing produces the upward lift for the airplane. The shape of the wings determines how fast and high the plane can fly.

Thrust: you can provide the thrust by using a balloon or a rubber band. To provide the lift: to build a lifting force in an aircraft, all you need is create a lower pressure above the aircraft and a higher pressure below the aircraft. The shape of the wing that is curved provide this. The shape of the wing that is curved creates more pressure underneath and lift the plane up. To make the plane fly: two things are needed: lift and thrust.

MATERIALS: Full size foam plate Scissors Masking tape Large paper clips Rubber bands Non-bendable straws Rulers Experiment 1 Thrust Aim: To demonstrate thrust

1- Fold back the top three centimetres of the straw and insert the rubber band into the fold. 2. Fold the straw over the rubber band and secure the end with masking tape. This creates the launcher for the flyer. 3- Cut an equilateral triangle out of the flat side of the plate. A good size to start with is 12 cm x 12 cm x 12 cm. 4. Tape the paper clip to the top of the foam wings. Then tape the wings to the top of the launcher so that it extends slightly over the tip. Procedure

5- Hook the rubber band around the tip of your thumb and pull back on the opposite end of the flyer. Release the straw and the flyer will fly forward.

Method 1- Stretch out a balloon by blowing it up and letting air out of it a few times. 2- Blow the balloon again 3- Get a plastic cap with a screw lid and put the neck of the balloon around it. 4- Open the cap and observe what happens. Aim: To demonstrate thrust Materials Balloon, plastic cap with a screw lid Thrust Experiment 2

Instructions : Divide students into 6 teams. Each team chooses a letter and answer the question behind it. The team who chooses the letter that has the word prize behind it, wins. Play on full screen and click in the middle of the letter.
