totalitarianism – a system of government that exerts total control over a nation and its citizens
appeasement- policy of giving in to a competitor’s demands in order to preserve the peace

Why do you think there was so much opposition to the Treaty of Versailles in America?
Answers will vary, but should include the idea that most Americans had doubts about the harsh treatment Germany was given. Many did not want American foreign policy restricted by the League of Nations.
