1 Basic Vocabulary for Persuasive Texts

2 Commonplace Assertions
Other strategies used Commonplace Assertions a statement that many people assume to be true, but which is not necessarily so. Boys like sports. Girls like shopping.

3 Other strategies used Factual claims
a statement that can be proved from evidence such as a fact, personal observation, reliable source, or an expert’s opinion It was raining outside this morning. George Washington was the first president of the United States.

4 Opinions Other Strategies used
a statement of personal belief, feeling, or thought, which does not require proof or evidence Journey is the best rock band ever. The Cowboys owner should not be allowed on the field during the game.

5 Vocabulary Foldable Take a color sheet of paper and a white sheet of paper. Fold each one lengthwise. Place the white page inside the color page and glue the right side of the white paper to the right side of the color paper. Add the Title: PERSUADE; CONVINCE; APPEAL to the front cover

6 Vocabulary Foldable Take a color sheet of white; fold it lengthwise (hotdog) Take and fold it in half lengthwise from top to bottom Do this again two more times so you have 8 rectangles Place the white page inside the color page and glue the right side of the white paper to the right side of the color paper. 8 Open the foldable and hold the white page between your thumb and finger.
Using scissors, cut this piece in half up to the fold. Next, cut the two pieces you made in half. Then cut each piece in half again. Do this one more time with each piece you have made. You now have 8 flaps. On each flap write the vocabulary words, one word or phrase on each flap.

10 On the inside of each flap you will write the definition of the word on the left and include an example for each word on the right. You may include a picture if that will help you to remember the meanings of the words.
