9 The Policy of Appeasement
France and England allowed Hitler to keep Austria and the Sudetenland They believed that Hitler was done expanding Neville Chamberlain was a hero in England English believed that Chamberlain kept them out of war

10 Then Hitler took the rest of Czechoslovakia
And made a nonagression treaty with Russia Also a secret agreement with Russia over an upcoming invasion of Poland

13 Hitler demands Danzig and the Polish Corridor
Wanted to build a road across the Polish corridor linking the two parts of Germany. Wanted the return of the port city of Danzig Was refused by the Poles and the League of Nations

14 Hitler claimed that… The Poles were committing atrocities on Germans in the Polish Corridor So he attacked! England and France had promised Poland help if Hitler attacked

15 BLITZKRIEG Means lightening war
Brits and French could not send help on time As the Germans attacked Poland on their western front…Russia attacked from the east. Warsaw fell in 3 weeks

16 SITZKRIEG From the fall of Poland (fall of 1939) to the spring of 1940 Hitler made no other aggressive move Many in Europe and U.S. womdered if he was done However…Russia was pretty active

Finland fought alone Lasted for 3 months The U.S. felt badly about Finland The Fins were the only country to repay the U.S. in full after WWI Congress voted to send the Fins $30,000,000 in non-military supplies

19 Spring 1940 April Hitler demanded occupation of Denmark and Norway. May Hitler demanded occupation of the Netherlands and Belgium The Neatherlands held out for 5 days Belgium held out for 18 days

20 Belgium Had help from the English and French
BUT they were trapped at Dunkirk

21 Miracle at Dunkirk English and French troops in Belgium had their backs to the English Chanel and were going to be overwhelmed by German Troops They called for help from anyone with private crafts that could reach them 600 private craft arrived and saved 90% of the men trapped there

22 BUT The English and French had to leave their weapons behind
Hitler attacked France and France fell in 3 weeks Italy attacked France from the south in the last week

23 Terms of the Armistice The French had to give up 1 million POWs to the Germans Germany would occupy 2/3 of France Allowed for a puppet government in the Southern third The Vichy government was led by Petain (a French general who was a heor in WWI)

24 Hitler made an offer To Winston Churchill
Since the English were also Aryans… Hitler would leave England alone if England would acknowledge that the rest of the European continent belonged to Germany. Churchill refused

25 The Battle of Britain Hitler began to bomb the Brits non stop in order to prepare for an invasion across the English Channel The bomb9ing continued until the end of the war First they targeted military bases and weapons factories Then…civilian population

26 German civilians Began to starve as a result of the British navy blockading the Coast

27 Charles de Gaulle (French)
Set up a government in exile in England AND organized the Free French Movement Was an underground organization in France and elsewhere in Europe dedicated to interferring with the Nazi efforts Had their own newspaper, helped POWs escape

28 Back to the Battle of Britain
Hitler’s Luftwaffe v the RAF (Royal Air Force) The Brits had radar Hitler was forced to “delay” the invasion of Britain.
