1 Energy

2 What is Energy? Energy is the ability to do work or to produce change.
We use energy to listen to music, watch TV, play video games, even our bodies use energy. What is Energy?

3 Different Types of Energy
See page 8 in Student Guide Examples of energy video clip Potential Energy- is energy stored within any physical thing. Kinectic Energy Chemical Energy Elastic Energy Nuclear Energy Thermal Energy Electric energy = Electricity

4 Electricity can be generated by renewable and nonrenewable resources
Electricity can be generated by renewable and nonrenewable resources. Nonrenewable energy clip Renewable video clip

5 Nonrenewable Resources
Coal – In a coal-fired power plant, the burning coal heats water, producing steam. Released under pressure the steam contains large amounts of energy which is converted into electricity. Natural Gas- In a natural gas fired power plant the gas is mixed with compressed air and ignited. The expanding hot gas contains energy which is harnessed to produce electricity.

6 Renewable (Green Energy)
Wind power captures the energy in wind to produce electricity

7 Renewable (Green Energy)
Solar power- harnesses the energy from the sun to produce electricity

8 Renewable (Green Energy)
Hydropower- uses water to generate electricity

9 How is your electricity generated?
Southern California Edison usage.

10 Are you shocked that 48% of our electricity comes from Natural Gas?
Southern California Edison is currently trying to increase the amount of energy produced by renewable resources. They have a goal to increase it from 16% to 20%. Problems with Our Dependence on Fossil Fuel Is this Really Enough?

11 5% of the world’s population lives in the USA but the USA uses 26% of the world’s energy.

12 If we don’t start to generate more electricity from renewable resources. We will run out!
