3 "I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day of January 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of l My birth certificate lists my name as Calliope Helen Stephanides. My most recent driver’s license...records my first name simply as Cal." This is the story of three generations of the Greek-American Stephanides family who travel from a tiny village overlooking Mount Olympus in Asia Minor to Prohibition-era Detroit, witnessing its glory days as the Motor City, and the race riots of l967, before they move out to the tree-lined streets of suburban Grosse Pointe, Michigan. 18 Nobody blows smoke like Nick Naylor
Nobody blows smoke like Nick Naylor. He’s a spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies–in other words, a flack for cigarette companies, paid to promote their product on talk and news shows. The problem? He’s so good at his job, so effortlessly unethical, that he’s become a target for both anti-tobacco terrorists and for the FBI.

24 “She might even be your lovely school-teacher who is reading these words to you at this very moment. Look carefully at that teacher. Perhaps she is smiling at the absurdity of such a suggestion. Don't let that put you off. It could be part of cleverness. I am not, of course, telling you for one second that your teacher actually is a witch. All I am saying is that she might be one. It is most unlikely. But--here comes the big "but"--not impossible.”

28 Mrs. Smith’s Rules for Reading
Read whatever you want. Don’t be afraid to read something too difficult or too easy. Read whenever you want (as long as you are not driving or attending class). Don’t worry about reading too fast or too slow. You are allowed to read on electronic devices. You are allowed to write in books and bend the pages. You don’t have to apologize for skimming or rereading. You can fall asleep while reading or stay up way too late. You can stop reading a book before you finish it. Or you can reread a book you really love. Learning to read for pleasure is completely up to you! Mrs. Smith’s Rules for Reading
